"CRIMINALS" SHOT DEAD LEADING LOYALIST

A leading loyalist shot dead in Belfast was the victim of a criminal attack not a sectarian or paramilitary one. Thomas Stewart 32 was a UVF commander until he was suspended by the terrorist group for an inquiry. He was shot in the street by gunmen this morning. David Ervine of the PUP which is linked with the UVF said the murder was the work of "criminal elements". The RUC has said it does not believe the IRA was involved.

Ruth Neave has been found not guilty of

killing her son Rikki. Bob Sinkinson: Neave was later jailed for seven years for cruelty to Rikki & her daughters and for drug offences & burglary. She was a drug addict & had found it difficult to cope. She had asked social services to take Rikki into care but nothing happened. The rest of the family has asked for a public inquiry. They say the tragedy would not have happened if they had been alerted.

SUSPENSIONS FOLLOW RIKKI NEAVE TRIAL The health & public services union is calling for a public inquiry over concerns raised in the Rikki Neave case Social services inspectors are going to Cambridgeshire to find out why Rikki was not taken into care despite being on the at risk register. The boy's mother Ruth Neave was jailed yesterday for cruelty but cleared of his murder. Two members of Cambridgeshire Social Services have been suspended.

####################################### MAN GETS 20 YEARS FOR SLAYING ELEPHANT A Vietnamese man who killed a domesticated elephant for its tusks has been jailed for 20 years. He was also ordered to pay the equivalent of nearly £7 000 in damages. The Supreme People's Court in Danang jailed Ho Van An along with three accomplices for the killing in the central highlands province of Daklak. An 60 had several previous convictions for killing elephants a protected species in Vietnam.

MOTHER IS JAILED BUT CLEARED OF MURDER

Ruth Neave the mother of six-year-old Rikki Neave has been found not guilty of his killing by a Northampton court. But she was jailed for seven years after admitting cruelty to Rikki & two of her daughters & charges of supplying amphetamines & burglary. Rikki's body was found in woodland near his home in Peterborough in November 1994 the day after he disappeared. He had been strangled & his body laid out in a ritualistic star shape.
