IRAN DEMANDS AID AS KURDS FLEE FIGHTING

Iran has appealed for international aid to cope with tens of thousands of Kurdish refugees heading for its border after further fighting in northern Iraq Iran's mission to the UN said help was needed to prevent a "human catastrophe" following the the fall of the key town of Sulaimaniyah to Iraqi-backed Kurds. Meanwhile Iraq says it will lift its economic embargo on the Kurd area. It also says it is granting a general amnesty to the Kurdish people.

fired by Iraq at American F16 fighters: According to the Pentagon one or more likely two Iraqi surface-to-air missiles were fired at the F16s in the late morning local time. Both missiles missed the planes which were on a routine patrol of the Northern no-fly zone. The Pentagon official said the missiles were so far off target that the pilots did not even realise they were being fired at.

However the incident will raise tensions still further at a time when America is already considering renewed strikes against Iraqi defence systems.
