EX-BELGIAN MINISTER IN MURDER ARREST

A former Belgian government minister has been arrested in connection with the unsolved murder of a former socialist deputy prime minister in 1991 Alain Van der Biest was detained over the killing of Andre Cools following testimony by his former secretary Richard Taxquet. It was followed by the resignation of one of the case's police investigators. A statement said Raymond Brose quit over doubts about his professionalism.

IRAQ MUST PAY FOR AGGRESSION SAYS US

Saddam Hussein must be made to pay for acts of Iraqi aggression the US Secretary of State has reaffirmed. Warren Christopher said the US would mount more strikes if Iraq made further incursions in the north of the country. He told BBC1's Breakfast with Frost the Kurdish conflict had given Saddam an "interesting pretext" on which to test the will of the West. He said the need in the region now was for "watchful waiting".

S AFRICAAt least 18 miners have been hurt & 27 arrested after fighting between workers belonging to two different unions at East Driefontein gold mine south-west of Johannesburg. INDIA Police say 35 people were killed when a lorry carrying 70 people from a wedding party fell from a bridge into a swollen river at Cuddapah in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

TUC CHALLENGES UNIONS TO RECRUIT 5M

Unions could recruit up to five million new members according to a survey of workers by the TUC. In the poll of 1 500 workers many said they were not in a union simply because they had never been asked to join. On the opening day of the TUC Congress in Blackpool TUC general secretary John Monks said the survey showed there was "huge potential" for union recruits He challenged unions to bring millions of workers into trade unionism.
