LEBED CALLS MINISTER JIBE INSIGNIFICANT

Russian security chief Alexander Lebed has dismissed as insignificant criticisms of his Chechnya peace deal by Russia's interior minister. "I am not in the habit of giving attention to such insignificant things " he said on a trip to Brussels. Anatoly Kulikov had accused the truce of undermining Russia's ability to restore order in the breakaway republic Russian troops have begun withdrawing having failed to establish control.

A Conservative MP who has quit as a parliamentary aide insists it had nothing to do with differences with the Government over Europe. James Cran said he had no plans to campaign against the Government over the issue after standing down as Ulster parliamentary private secretary. The MP for Beverley said he had told Tory chairman Brian Mawhinney as much. He said 18 months as a parliamentary aide was "just about the right time".

BRUTON IN WARNING ABOUT USE OF VIOLENCE

The Irish premier has said republicans must stop using tactical violence if they want to be taken seriously. For the second day running John Bruton slammed the IRA's double bombing at the military base in Lisburn Co Antrim. Mr Bruton said the message was clear - violence & democracy did not mix. Opening an Irish parliamentary debate on violence in Northern Ireland he warned that the political process would go on with or without Sinn Fein.

LEGAL BID TO SCRAP MUSLIM PEACE DEAL

A group of senior politicians in the Philippines has launched a legal bid to annul a peace agreement between the government & Muslim separatists. Eight congressmen & a provincial governor have applied to the Supreme Court to scrap the deal which provides for a Muslim-led council in the south. They argue the deal which allows it to to oversee economic development there was imposed on the Christian majority. The deal ended 20 years of fighting.

ISRAEL VOWS TO STICK TO HEBRON PLEDGES

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his commitment to pull some troops out of the West Bank city of Hebron. But he gave parliament no timetable for the changes agreed in the previous framework of peace deals with the PLO. Israeli & PLO negotiators have been meeting in Gaza to discuss the issue. But Mr Netanyahu said the arrangements had to ensure the protection of the Jewish community & their holy places.
