ATTACKS ON IRAQ "EXTREMELY DANGEROUS"

Russia is said to be concerned at the "extremely dangerous" turn of events after the US missile attacks on Iraq. Foreign Minister Yevgeny Primakov said the raids were not justified & seemed to be a product of the approaching presidential elections. The Arab League condemned the strikes as having no legal basis. France has refused to back the raid: a government spokesman called for a political solution to the crisis.

DESPATCH

The aftermath of the second missile attack on Iraq: At a briefing at the Pentagon the vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff General Joseph Ralston said patrols in the expanded zone could safely begin. While no operation was risk free he was confident that Iraq's air defences had been sufficiently neutralised. Sixteen air defence installations had been targeted in the initial cruise missile attack & four of them had been hit a second time he said.

The aftermath

of the second missile attack on Iraq: Satellite pictures showed that yesterday's targets had not been completely destroyed. General Ralston said it was possible that Iraq might later be able to reactivate some of these facilities. He refused to rule out further military action by the United States. That he said would depend on how Saddam Hussein reacted.

RESERVES SHOW $98m

UNDERLYING DECLINE Britain's official reserves of gold & foreign currency fell a good deal more than expected last month. Treasury figures show reserves falling by an underlying $98m in August. This followed a July fall of just $17m and compares with market expectations of a fall of between $25m & $50m. Actual reserves posted a fall of $113m. Underlying reserves are usually taken as a pointer to official intervention in defence of sterling.

EVENTS IN IRAQ

LIFT OIL PRICE News of the US missile raids on Iraq had an immediate impact on oil prices. At one stage Brent crude for delivery next month was trading at $23.50 a bulk barrel or $1.50 higher on the day. By 1430 when New York's Nymex reopened for business after its three-day break the price had slipped back to $22.65. Analysts were agreed it was unlikely Iraqi oil would flow this year. This & low stocks ahead of the winter season meant prices could rise further. Sport 300 Radio/TV 600 Fantasy Options Exchanges Moneyfile
