The head of Scotland's Catholic church

has accused Tony Blair of inconsistency over abortion. Archbishop of Glasgow Cardinal Thomas Winning says the inconsistency is in branding Labour the party of Christian values yet failing to condemn abortion His remarks come in the wake of the publication of a document by Roman Catholic bishops which was viewed by some as endorsement of Labour policies. But Cardinal Winning takes a different approach. Cardinal Thomas Winning says Tony Blair and new Labour have failed to condemn abortion yet claim to have Christian values. That he feels is a sham. An aide to the cardinal insists his comments were not intended to be a personal attack on Mr Blair. It is aimed at politicians in general who failed to put abortion at the centre of the debate on social values. The Labour leader says he disagrees that the way MPs vote on abortion law should be a matter of party politics. It has always been a matter of conscience with a free vote and while Mr Blair is personally against abortion he accepts the woman's right to choose. After a week in which the political scene has been dominated by morality questions this will touch a raw nerve.
