KARADZIC "VOTED IN BOSNIAN ELECTIONS"

Former Bosnian Serb leader & alleged war criminal Radovan Karadzic has voted in Bosnia's elections the UN has said. A spokesman said the UN had preliminary information that Karadzic had voted in person in the Serb stronghold of Pale. Dr Karadzic is wanted by a UN tribunal to face trial on genocide charges but since he has not been convicted he was eligible to vote in today's poll. However the agreement which led to the elections barred him from standing.

Bosnian poll have been dismissed. Bob Simpson reports: The leader of the SDA the Party of Democratic Action has sent a letter to the UN alleging that the voting in the Srbska Republika was flawed. Conditions for free & fair elections did not exist it said and there was evidence of technical irregularities. There was a swift response from Richard Holbrooke the architect of the Dayton agreement under which the poll was held

Bosnian poll have been dismissed. Bob Simpson reports: US envoy Richard Holbrooke said that electoral challenges existed in almost every country. But he said this challenge was vague in nature & was hard for him to make any comment. Mr Holbrooke said the machinery existed to deal with complaints & the evidence would be reviewed over the next 72 hours by a special body.

BOSNIAN ELECTIONS UNFAIR - MUSLIM GROUP

Bosnia's main Muslim party says it will not recognise any election results from Serb-controlled territory. President Alija Izetbegovic's Party of Democratic Action claimed in a letter to the UN Security Council that there had been serious irregularities. Some reports claim Serb refugees have been directed to vote in areas other their homes to ensure Serb majorities. Polling in some locations has been extended to allow everyone to vote.

KURDS PLEDGE TO KEEP DISTANCE FROM IRAQ

Iraqi-backed Kurd leader Massoud Barzani has pledged to help keep Iraqi President Saddam Hussein out of Kurd- held northern Iraq diplomats say. The agreement came after a meeting between Mr Barzani & a senior US official in Ankara Turkey. Before the meeting the US said it would call on the Kurdish leader to cut his links with Iraq. His Kurdistan Democratic Party seized control of northern Iraq last month.

CONFLICT OVER GREENS' ELECTION STRATEGY

The Green Party is facing a call to pull out of the next general election. The party is facing a slump in support and membership despite an increasing interest in environmental issues. Dr Spencer Fitzgibbon who is on the Green's policy committee has put down a party conference motion proposing the party does not contest the election. But party spokesman David Taylor said the Greens must take on the main parties & fight for their cause.
