AUSTRIAN TOURIST IN GANG RAPE HORROR

Police are hunting a gang of youths who raped an Austrian mother-of-two during a weekend shopping trip to London. The 32-year-old woman was attacked by six youths - aged between 14 & 20 - as she went for a stroll from her hotel in the King's Cross area. Police said the gang grabbed the woman when she got to a canal towpath stripped her naked & raped her before pushing her into the canal. She was treated for cuts & shock.

Sussex in which one man died helped avert serious IRA attacks. Jane Peel: The scale of this anti-terrorist operation is now clear. It was without question the most significant seizure of bomb-making equipment in Britain. It included ten tonnes of home-made explosives ready mixed for use; 2lbs of semtex; three kalashnikov rifles; two handguns ammunition & detonators. The early morning raids also recovered two lorries & other vehicles.

Sussex in which one man died helped avert serious IRA attacks. Jane Peel: Much of the equipment was found at an industrial storage facility in London. Assistant Commissioner David Veness said the home-made explosive had been put in boxes. With a little extra work it would have been ready to detonate. He said he could not rule out the possibility that a major bombing was being planned by the IRA for today or tomorrow.

####################################### CLARKE: IF EMU RIGHT UK SHOULD SIGN UP The Chancellor has said Britain must sign up to the European single currency with the first wave of member countries But Kenneth Clarke said the move had to be in the national economic interest. He told the BBC it would be "pathetic" for Britain "to not be able to make up its mind & then join late". A single currency was now "very likely" by the turn of the century he said as an EU finance ministers' meeting on EMU technical arrangements came to a close.

PM "DELIGHTED" BY ANTI-TERROR OPERATION

The Prime Minister has said he is "absolutely delighted" by the success of the latest anti-terrorist operation. John Major said the security forces deserved "all our congratulations for this important operation". He said the discovery of IRA attack plans made it "impossible to reconcile Sinn Fein's rhetoric for peace". But Mr Major stressed Britain remained "fully committed" to a "comprehensive political settlement" in Ulster.
