Tony Blair has stressed the need for a

united Britain in his speech to the Labour annual conference. Mr Blair came on like a rock star & turned into an evangelist with his "I vow to thee my country" passage of commitment to the changes he would seek over five years of government. It was a personal individual pledge rather than a party programme from a leader who has achieved a remarkable dominance over a party traditionally suspicious of leadership. Like John Major he built on personal childhood experience to underline his beliefs in family values community & teamwork. Stressing social justice in a wealthy Britain his theme was that Labour was the party of aspirants now. It was the party which would release the whole country's potential. Mr Blair set his "Britain united" togetherness against Tory individualism offering voters a detriablised party that was no longer a cult or a sect. Pinching the soccer song theme he pledged that New Labour had "come home" It was an inspired performance from a man convinced he will address his next party conference as prime minister.
