FORSYTH SAVAGES GUN LOBBY'S POLL PLANS

The Scottish Secretary has attacked plans by a pro-gun group to field a general election candidate against him. He said the idea was insensitive & in poor taste but conceded everyone had a right to stand in an election. Mr Forsyth who is defending a majority of just 703 said it would be upsetting for people in Dunblane. But the Shooters' Rights Association said it was the only way to highlight their argument against gun controls.

NETANYAHU SORRY FOR CHIRAC "JOSTLING"

The Israeli Prime Minister has publicly apologised to the French President after a complaint about the behaviour of the security forces in Jerusalem. Jacques Chirac said he was swamped by police as he tried to walk among the crowd in the Arab area of the city. He lodged a formal protest with the Israeli government. Mr Netanyahu apologised saying what was done was "done for a good cause to protect a friend".

KIN OF US PLANE CRASH VICTIM TO SUE TWA

The family of a man who died when a TWA jumbo jet exploded off New York in July killing all on board is suing TWA & the Boeing company for $100m. Lee Kreindler is claiming wilful misconduct & negligence. He believes the plane crashed from mechanical failure caused by a fuel pump explosion The plane was too old & had not been maintained properly he said. But US investigators say they are still not sure what caused the explosion.

TRIMBLE DISMISSES DUBLIN ROLE IN ULSTER

The Ulster Unionist leader has rejected the suggestion that Dublin should have more say in Northern Ireland's affairs. Speaking on BBC TV David Trimble said it was "illegitimate" to think that "a foreign government should exercise power within our own country". "Why should it have any say in Northern Ireland...over people to whom it is not accountable who have not elected it?" That wasthe very negation of any form of democratic procedure he insisted.

REFUGEES FLEE FIGHTING IN EAST ZAIRE

UN aid workers in Zaire are trying to locate hundreds of thousands of Hutu refugees who have fled camps after ethnic fighting broke out. About 250 000 mainly refugees from Rwanda & Burundi have left the eastern town of Uvira. Aid groups are struggling to cope with the sudden movement. The UN says 54 foreign aid workers have been evacuated from the town & have been moved north to the town of Bukavu.

HEBRON PULLOUT WITHIN REACH: NETANYAHU

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said a deal with the PLO on a troop withdrawal from the West Bank town of Hebron is within reach. But Palestinians would have to stop using "delaying tactics" he said. "There has been some progress even considerable in the negotiations " Mr Netanyahu said in an address. However Palestinian President Yasser Arafat said intensive talks had yielded no progress on the Hebron pullout.

Ex-South African president FW de Klerk knew people were being murdered by the apartheid regime five former police officers have claimed. They told the Truth & Reconciliation Commission he had lied when he denied knowledge of the killings. "We have been deserted by the National Party...and have been thrown in the gutter " they said. A Tory MP has called for five days of silence from radio & television to mark the millennium. John Butcher MP for Coventry South West has written to National Heritage Secretary Virginia Bottomley. "In Britain...we should distinguish ourselves from the razzmatazz of the rest of the world & allow people some peace & quiet " Mr Butcher said. The time gained could be spent with elderly members of the family he said.
