The European Commission President says no to TV duel with Sir James Goldsmith. Jacques Santer chose tough language to reject Sir James Goldsmith's call for a live television debate on Europe. This week the financier behind the Referendum Party placed several full- page advertisements in UK newspapers. One portrayed the 20 members of the European Commission led by Mr Santer as the real British government - a claim the Commission dismissed as "absurd".
