UK ECSTASY USE ROCKETS IN FIVE YEARS

The number of people taking ecstasy in the UK has nearly doubled in just five years the United Nations has warned. Users now account for 2.2% of the population between 16 & 59 compared with 1% in 1991-2 the UN's Office on Drugs & Crime reports. After Australia & the Irish Republic Britain is the country with the third highest rate of use in the world. However the UN says amphetamine use in the UK has dropped probabaly as a result of people switching to ecstasy.

STAY TRUE TO LABOUR VALUES BROWN SAYS

Labour's "road to social justice" will often be a hard one Chancellor Gordon Brown has warned the party. But only by being true to its values and objectives would Labour regain the public's trust he said in a 40-minute speech at its Bournemouth conference. With 28m people in work Britain was closer to full employment "than ever". "Have confidence in our principles. Labour is best when we are boldest when we are united " he concluded before receiving a two-minute ovation.

The Prime Minister has defended his decision to take the country to war insisting that Britain had not been acting as "America's poodle". "Iraq has divided the international community it has divided the party the country families friends " he told his party's Bournemouth conference But those who disagreed needed to understand why he went to war & why he would do so again Mr Blair insisted Britain was acting against threats to global security he said.

Allegations of human rights abuse at

the Yarl's Wood Immigration Centre are to be investigated by the Prison Ombudsman BBC R4's Today has learnt. A number of former detainees have claimed some guards used excessive force & kept people in a segregation unit for up to 72 hours without food. Centre manager Group Four denied the claims & backed its staff. The Bedfordshire centre reopened on Sunday for the first time since last year's riot & fire there.

If you enter the date, say 12th May 1998, into the Google search engine above you will be able to select the pages which have notes of the news on that day. You can then use the Note Navigation Bar to scroll through all the data for that day.


You can move to the next day or to the previous day by using the Date Navigation Bar.


On any particular day, you can see what else happened on that day by using the "What Else Happened on this Day" navigation bar. This will take you through all the available data for the selected day.


Alternatively, you can get a list of some of the main items featured in a particular month by clicking on the MONTH tab above and you will find a clickable list of the month's events from which to choose.
