LIBYA HOPES DEAL WILL IMPROVE US TIES

Libya has said it hopes its £1.7bn deal for the Lockerbie bombing will help to improve its ties with the United States The Middle East country has accepted responsibility for the 1988 tragedy & agreed to compensate relatives of the 270 who died in the disaster. The Libyan Foreign Ministry said it hoped the accord will improve relations with the US to match the level of good relations Tripoli has with the UK. Officials accepted full blame for the tragedy in a letter to the UN on Friday

Palestinian president Yasser Arafat has accepted the resignation of his prime minister Mahmoud Abbas. Mr Abbas ` also known as Abu Mazen ` was under pressure after being faced with a vote of no-confidence in the Palestinian parliament. According to Palestinian law Mr Arafat has five weeks to find a replacement. Reacting to the news Russia has said the Abbas resignation would seriously complicate the search for Middle East peace via the US-brokered "road-map".

The European Union has warned that Palestinian premier Mahmoud Abbas' resignation has plunged the Middle East peace process into a "critical phase". The resignation overshadowed the second day of informal talks by EU foreign ministers near Lake Garda in Italy. Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said it was "a huge tragedy that the Palestinians should be so divided". Ministers also agreed to blacklist the political wing of radical Islamic group Hamas in a bid to cut terror funding.

"PALESTINIAN KILLED" IN RAID ON NABLUS

A Palestinian has been killed after Israeli troops raided suspected militants' hideouts in the West Bank city of Nablus Palestinian sources say Israeli military sources said troops on a mission to round up militants were ambushed by Palestinians who opened fire & threw hand-grenades. Local residents reported four large explosions at a building after a Israeli soldiers then removed a man's body witnesses said.

US IRAQ PROPOSAL RUNS INTO OPPOSITION

Russia has joined France & Germany in warning that the United States' proposal for a multinational peace force in Iraq needs more hard work. The US is urging the United Nations to back a resolution encouraging other nations to send more troops to Iraq. But France & Germany say the draft resolution does not give enough power to the UN. Up to 40 000 more troops are needed US officials estimate. The occupation is costing the US about $4bn a month.

US UK TO SEARCH SHIPS FOR BANNED ARMS

The US the UK & nine of their allies are to press ahead to intercept ships and planes suspected of carrying banned weapons despite protests from China. The agreement endorses President Bush's Proliferation Security Initiative. The 11 nations including Japan Italy France Germany Spain & Australia have agreed to board ships thought to be carrying weapons of mass destruction Planes suspected of carrying WMDs will be forced to land. China says the moves may contravene international law.

ISRAELI MINISTER URGES ARAFAT EXPULSION

Israel's foreign minister has called for Yasser Arafat to be expelled from the Palestinian territories. Silvan Shalom said the Palestinian president's expulsion was "an inevitable result after years of involvement in terrorism". Any decision would await a "strategic discussion" by Israel's cabinet but gave no date when this would take place Earlier the government said Israel would not deal with a Palestinian leadership dominated by Yasser Arafat.
