TRAVELLERS DE-RAILED BY EXPRESS TROUBLE

Passengers were forced off a train after fighting broke out on a service between Glasgow & Doncaster. Several travellers chose to get off the East Coast Main Line service in Northumberland while they waited for police to arrive. Trains on the line were delayed by more than an hour & nine people were arrested for violent disorder. A police spokesman said that passengers returned to the carriages & the train arrived safely at Alnmouth.

DERAILMENT WAS OUR FAULT SAYS JARVIS

The contractor Jarvis which maintains the tracks at Kings Cross station in London says it was to blame for the derailment there earlier today. Commuters suffered severe disruption after two carriages of the 7am train to Glasgow slipped off the tracks as the train left the station at 10mph. Jarvis said points had been improperly reset after overnight engineering work. The Transport Secretary Alistair Darling has called the incident "totally unacceptable".

Two Glasgow University students could

forfeit their degrees after being fined £900 for an unprovoked attack on Celtic midfielder Neil Lennon. Gregg Miller & Neil MacLeod both aged 20 admitted attacking the star on 8 May & were fined a total of £900 by Glasgow Sheriff Court. Glasgow University says they will now face an internal disciplinary hearing and if found guilty could be expelled It said it had a strict code of conduct with expulsion a possible punishment.

FRESH SHOOTING AT UK EMBASSY IN IRAN

Shots have been fired at the British embassy in the Iranian capital Tehran in the third such incident this month. An embassy spokesman said two shots were fired on Sunday evening but no- one had been injured. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks which Iranian officials earlier described as unacceptable. The incidents come amid a strain in relations between London & Tehran over the arrest in the UK of a former Iranian ambassador to Argentina.

ELLIS WAS BATTERED APPEAL JUDGES TOLD

Ruth Ellis the last woman hanged in Britain was suffering from battered woman syndrome when she murdered her lover the Court of Appeal has heard. Ellis 28 shot David Blakely dead in Hampstead north London in 1955. Her sister is asking judges to substitute a verdict of manslaughter on the grounds of provocation and/or diminished responsibility. The court heard that she had suffered a miscarriage 10 days earlier after Mr Blakely ` the father ` punched her.
