Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has condemned the "cowardly" assassination attempt on Aquila al-Hashimi one of three women on Iraq's Governing Council He said the Government "deplores" the shooting of Ms Hashimi outside her Baghdad home & supported her work to build a "free & democratic Iraq". Ms Hashimi had been due to fly to New York as part of an Iraqi delegation to the UN General Assembly next week. She is in a critical condition with serious abdominal injuries.

The wife of a 90-year-old war hero left lying on the floor after paramedics refused to pick him up has rejected an apology from their ambulance trust. Air Marshal Sir Patrick Dunn who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1941 fell at home on Wednesday. His wife could not lift him so called 999 but paramedics said they were not insured & phoned for lifting gear. Royal Berkshire Ambulance has since apologised but Lady Diana Dunn dismissed the apology as "ridiculous".
