India's government has approved the purchase of 66 Hawk trainer jets from BAE Systems for about £830m. The UK firm was competing with Dassault of France with its fixed-wing Alphajet to win the contract. The Government is considering calls to send more troops to Iraq amid continuing attacks on coalition forces. The Ministry of Defence has ordered a review of troop numbers. A police officer has been taken off the team investigating the deaths of four soldiers at Deepcut barracks in Surrey after a claim of misconduct. Surrey Police said an allegation of "inappropriate behaviour" had been made against a detective constable who faces a disciplinary hearing. The inquiry is examining the deaths from gunshot wounds of four soldiers at the barracks between 1995 & 2002. Their families do not accept the Army's claims that they committed suicide.

Iraq expert Dr David Kelly was "taken aback" by the way BBC journalist Andrew Gilligan tried to elicit information from him the Hutton inquiry has heard. At the inquiry into Dr Kelly's death fellow former arms inspector Olive Bosch quoted him as saying Mr Gilligan had tried to play a "name game". The aim had been to find out who had had information "inserted" into an Iraq arms dossier Dr Kelly told her. Dr Kelly told her he had never before had to play such a "game" she said.
A car bomb at Baghdad's main police station has killed an Iraqi officer & wounded about 15 the US military said. The bomb was believed to have been left in a Chevrolet parked in a pound for stolen cars a spokesman said. The US wants to more quickly bring former Iraqi soldiers into the country's security forces US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld has said. All will be carefully screened to weed out those with anti-US leanings he said during an unannounced Iraq visit. Mr Rumsfeld will meet US commanders & US civil administrator L Paul Bremer.
