ACTION TAKEN AGAINST WEB MUSIC PIRATES

The music industry in the US is taking legal action against people accused of downloading music from the internet without permission. The Recording Industry Association of America is suing around 260 users for up to £100 000 for each song though many settlements will be far smaller. Those facing the lawsuits had opened up their hard drives to other users in song-swapping networks. Until now the group has been targeting the websites that enable the copying.

But Whitehall sources have told the BBC Mr Hoon volunteered information that there were disputes within the DIS. The committee has examined claims that Iraq's threat was exaggerated.

Downing St has called for an inquiry into how a report by MPs said to be highly critical of Defence Secretary Geoof Hoon was leaked to the press. Alleged extracts from the report in the London Evening Standard say Mr Hoon will be accused of misleading MPs over the Iraq dossier affair. The report leaves Mr Hoon more exposed as the likely "fall guy" for the affair the newspaper suggests. Prime Minister Tony Blair has denied that No 10 leaked the document.

PROMS SOLOIST PLEADS FOR FLUTE'S RETURN

A flautist due to play at the Last Night of the Proms has appealed for his from a London bus. The £11 000 flute was being transported to a workshop by a specialist craftsman through the centre of London. When he awoke the headpiece of the instrument had disappeared. Its owner Michael Cox the BBC Symphony Orchestra's principal flautist is due to play two solos on Saturday.

NURSERY NURSES TURN DOWN NEW PAY OFFER

Nursery nurses are set to reject a pay deal which could take them to £18 000 a year ` a rise of about £4 000. Details of the offer by employers Cosla are contained in a leaked letter which has been obtained by BBC Scotland. The briefing note by Cosla president Pat Watters was sent to MPs & MSPs and said a new grading system would allow the nurses to earn up to £18 000. The deal will be formally put to union Unison on Friday but indications are that it will be rejected.

BOY FOUR DIES IN IRAQ SUICIDE BOMBING

A car bomb in Kurdish northern Iraq has killed a four-year-old boy & injured 47 others including six Americans. A suicide bomber also died in the blast outside offices in Irbil used by the US Defence Department to house staff. It is the first time such a large bomb has been detonated in northern Iraq since the end of major hostilities was declared by the US four months ago. Meanwhile one US soldier was killed and another wounded in an attack on their vehicle north-east of Baghdad.

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon came under withering attack from both sides. Tories condemned the Government's post- conflict policies as a "shambles" after recent attacks on British & US forces Robin Cook who quit as Commons Leader over the decision to go to war said "no reasonable member" could object to an extra 1 000 UK troops going to Iraq. But he added: "Those of us who had doubts whether it was wise to go into Iraq... do not have those doubts removed by today's announcement."

HOON DOSSIER ROLE "DISTURBS" COMMITTEE

Geoff Hoon has been criticised by MPs for failing to give full details of intelligence staff concerns about the contents of the Iraqi weapons dossier. The Intelligence & Security Committee said it was "disturbed" the Defence Secretary had not revealed the doubts. It added the MoD's failure to do so was "unhelpful & potentially misleading". ISC chairman Ann Taylor said it was felt Mr Hoon "did not lie" & her committee's report on the Government dossier did not call for him to resign.

NHS BAN "CONFINED WOMAN TO WHEELCHAIR"

A disabled woman has slept in her wheelchair for over a year because the local NHS trust banned staff from lifting her the High Court has heard. Keynes Bucks has multiple sclerosis and cannot get in & out of bed alone. Nurses who assisted her were withdrawn by Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust who said her spasms could injure them. Mrs Wolstenholme's counsel argued too much weight was attached to the carers' needs. The case continues in October.
