ARAFAT EXILE MOVES A MISTAKE EU SAYS
The EU has joined growing world opposition to any moves by Israel to expel Yasser Arafat from the West Bank. Removing the Palestinian leader would be a "terrible mistake" that would have "serious consequences" across the whole region officials said. President Bush is against expulsion believing it would be unhelpful US officials said. Britain China & Russia have also voiced opposition. Israel is adamant Mr Arafat continues to encourage attacks against Israelis.

GATWICK ALERT ` TWO RELEASED ON BAIL
Two people have been released on bail and a third is still being questioned after a security alert closed Gatwick Airport's south terminal on Friday. Bomb disposal experts carried out three controlled explosions on a car left on the northbound carriageway of the A23 but said no explosive device was found. The two men & a woman were arrested on suspicion of placing an article with intent under the Criminal Law Act 1977. Police have ruled out an attempted terrorist attack.

SWEDISH POLICE "HOLD KILLER'S PHOTO"
Police in Sweden have obtained CCTV images of the man they believe stabbed Foreign Minister Anna Lindh to death. The footage was filmed close to where she was attacked in a department store in Stockholm on Wednesday. Opinion polls indicate a very close result is likely in Sunday's referendum on adopting the euro. A Gallup poll of 1 033 people taken on September 11 showed support for joining at 43% with 42% opposed. Ms Lindh was a keen supporter of Swedish euro entry.

I'M STAYING HERE DEFIANT ARAFAT VOWS
Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has issued a defiant message to thousands of supporters after Israel said it was taking steps to expel him. Carried on a chair by bodyguards Mr Arafat addressed a crowd outside his Ramallah headquarters in the West Bank. "Abu Ammar is staying here " said Mr Arafat referring to his nom de guerre. Israel's security cabinet meeting in the wake of Tuesday's two Hamas suicide bombings has agreed in principle that he should be exiled from the region.

LOCKERBIE FATHER SAYS RELEASE MEGRAHI
The father of a man who died in the Lockerbie disaster has said that the Libyan man convicted of carrying out the bombing should now be freed. Abdelbasset al-Megrahi is being held in Barlinnie jail in Glasgow. Martin Cadman whose son Bill died in the 1988 bombing was speaking after the decision of the United Nations to lift sanctions imposed on Libya. Mr Cadman said it was clear that al- Megrahi was acting on the orders of the Libyan state & should be released.

FRAIL POPE STROKES SEPARATED TWINS
Pope John Paul II has struggled through a 2\-hour long Mass in Slovakia during which he stroked the faces of formerly conjoined twin girls. The 83-year-old Pontiff often slumped in his chair slurred his words & lost the place in his text during the Mass on a windswept hill at Roznava. He touched the faces of the three-year- old twins in a gesture which aides said showed opposition to abortion. Some 150 000 people attended the Mass including many from neighbouring Poland

PORN FILM "DESECRATES" ITALIAN CHURCH
A church in Italy may need to be reconsecrated after it emerged a porn movie had been filmed there in 1998. The fact only came to light after a man watching the film recognised his local church near Rome and called police. A priest had given permission to shoot a wedding scene but what was actually filmed was a man dressed as a priest having sex with a woman playing a bride Under ecclesiastical law this would make all weddings communions & baptisms held there since 1998 invalid.

US SORRY FOR "FRIENDLY FIRE" SHOOTINGS
Eight Iraqi policemen & a Jordanian guard were killed by "friendly fire" on Friday the US army has confirmed. Lieutenant Colonel George Krivo expressed deep regrets & apologised to families who lost loved ones in the incident at Fallujah west of Baghdad. But Lt Col Krivo said US soldiers had returned fire only when they were shot at from a lorry of unknown origin. Local officials said police came under US fire while they were chasing suspected criminals.
