HOON CAMPBELL RECALLED TO HUTTON PROBE

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon & former Downing St press chief Alastair Campbell have been recalled to give evidence to the Hutton inquiry. The two will appear before the probe into the death of Government weapons expert Dr David Kelly on the same day James Dingemans QC said. BBC correspondent Andrew Gilligan is also among those to be recalled. BBC director general Greg Dyke was among new witnesses appearing as the inquiry resumed after a 10-day break.

ATTACK ON BBC "ALMOST UNPRECEDENTED"

The Government's attack on the BBC over its reporting of issues around the Iraq war was "pretty near unprecedented" BBC Director General Greg Dyke has said Comments by former Downing Street press chief Alastair Campbell had been "ferocious" he told the inquiry into the death of scientist Dr David Kelly. The attack had been "on the BBC's journalistic integrity" he said. Downing St had denied a number of things that had never been alleged Mr Dyke told the Hutton inquiry.

WAR WIDOWS' PENSIONS "TO BE DOUBLED"

War widows can expect massive increases in their pensions when the Ministry of Defence announces the results of a review this week a newspaper reports. The Sunday Mirror claims that widows and widowers of those killed in action will have their pensions doubled. It also says that unmarried partners are to be given the right to death-in- service payments for the first time. The MoD confirmed the review's results would be announced within the next few days but would not reveal any details.

THURSDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

MPs paid tribute to Swedish foreign minister Anna Lindh who died after being stabbed on a shopping trip. Commons Leader Peter Hain said she was "a delightful & warm person" & "a great internationalist". Defence of the UK must involve operations overseas as much as at home Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon said. On overstretch of British forces he said it was not possible to meet every possible contingency but he warned: "There is no isolationist option."

HOON AGREED MoD's POLICY ON KELLY NAME

Geoff Hoon agreed the MoD's plan to release the name of weapons expert Dr David Kelly if asked by a journalist he has told the Hutton Inquiry. The Defence Secretary was appearing for a second time as a witness at the inquiry into Dr Kelly's death. The MoD had had a choice between lying obfuscating or telling the truth about the source Mr Hoon said. He denied that Government departments had conspired to between them provide a jigsaw identification of Dr Kelly.

PEACEKEEPERS FOR LIBERIA'S SECOND CITY

Peacekeepers are preparing to enter Liberia's second city Buchanan giving them control of the last road from Monrovia to the country's interior. About 550 West African troops are set to camp by a river dividing government forces from rebels of the Movement for Democracy in Liberia a spokesman said. An August peace deal between rebels & the government brought calm to Monrovia but unrest remains in the countryside. A power-sharing government is due to take power on October 14.

The 45-minute claim in a Government dossier on Iraq was based on accurate intelligence but misinterpreted the head of MI6 has told the Hutton Inquiry Via video-link Sir Richard Dearlove said the claim referred to battlefield weapons & reports linking it to long- range weapons were wrong. He was unaware of any issues of "spin" over the dossier at the time he said. Sir Richard said he did not think the dossier was substantially changed after Alastair Campbell's September 18 memo.

MORE CALLS FOR JUDICIAL INQUIRY ON IRAQ

MPs have repeated calls for a judicial inquiry into the Government's decision to go to war in Iraq. Former Labour Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said an inquiry would see a line drawn under the Iraq issue so that the focus could return to domestic issues. The Prime Minister would not recover credibility without an "honest open" admission he had made mistakes he said Conservative Chairman Theresa May said an inquiry was needed to restore trust and confidence in the Government.
