SNP'S SWINNEY STRESSES INDEPENDENCE

The Scottish National Party must show unity determination & a burning desire to win if it wants to achieve independence its leader has said. "We all believe in independence. We are all in this great cause together " John Swinney told the SNP's annual conference in Inverness. It was essential for the party to be in government not on the margins of Scottish politics Mr Swinney said. He faces a leadership challenge from rival Dr Bill Wilson.

LABOUR CONFERENCE OPENS WITH UNITY PLEA

Labour's conference has formally opened with a plea for unity as Tony Blair prepares to defend his policies. Mr Blair earlier warned there would be "no withdrawal" on plans for foundation hospitals & university top-up fees. In a rallying speech Labour chairman Ian McCartney warned delegates in Bournemouth to stick by "gut instincts of fairness... & solidarity". He urged activists to draw a line under their differences & unite to become "the natural party of Government".

PM ATTACKED ON WORKERS' RIGHTS PLEDGE

The country's biggest trade union has accused the Government of reneging on a pledge to end the "two-tier workforce" in the NHS & other public services. The Prime Minister is expected to say on Tuesday that a deal protecting council workers' rights will be extended to other public service staff. But as Labour's conference opened Unison claimed a Government special adviser had scuppered the plan. failure to act would be "shameful".

POLICE PROBE INTO FATAL HOUSE BLAZE

A fire in which a man & woman died may have been started deliberately police have said. Firefighters were called to the blaze on Sheffield's Wybourn estate early on Saturday morning. A 36-year-old woman was discovered dead in the house while a man aged in his 30s was later pronounced dead on arrival at hospital. A 24-year-old man is being questioned at Sheffield police station in connection with the incident.

CHECHNYA'S PRIME MINISTER "POISONED"

The acting president of Chechnya is seriously ill in hospital after apparently being poisoned. Officials said Anatoly Popov was flown to Moscow for treatment after the incident which comes a week before the troubled Russian republic's elections. Chechen separatist rebels have vowed to increase attacks in the run-up to the poll which Moscow says is a crucial step towards a political settlement. Years of armed conflict in Chechnya have left thousands killed.

SERVICES OVERHAUL PLEDGE FROM McCONNELL

First Minister Jack McConnell has promised a far-reaching public services shake-up in Scotland. He has faced criticism he has failed to keep pace with Tony Blair's modernising agenda south of the border. Mr McConnell said investment in health and education must be linked to what he called meaningful reform. He told his party's UK conference in Bournemouth that although it had been an "uncertain" year for the party ` it was not time to slacken.
