BLAIR LEADS TRIBUTES TO LEADER OF LORDS

The Prime Minister has paid tribute to Lord Williams of Mostyn after the death of the Leader of the House of Lords was announced. Tony Blair said the 62-year-old peer would be very greatly missed & had "earned the respect of colleagues of all parties". He added: "He was also a kind & generous man who sparked huge affection in all those who knew him. "He was a politician at the height of his powers."

HOON AGREED MoD's POLICY ON KELLY NAME

Geoff Hoon agreed the MoD's plan to release the name of weapons expert Dr David Kelly if asked by a journalist he has told the Hutton Inquiry. The Defence Secretary was appearing for a second time as a witness at the inquiry into Dr Kelly's death. The MoD had had a choice between lying obfuscating or telling the truth about the source Mr Hoon said. He denied that Government departments had conspired to between them provide a jigsaw identification of Dr Kelly.

The "right steps" were taken with regard to the welfare of Dr David Kelly Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has told the Hutton Inquiry into his death. Dr Kelly was "taken through" the MoD warned about the Q&A technique which led to his being named Mr Hoon said. This was not necessary Mr Hoon said as Dr Kelly had been repeatedly warned his name would become publicly known. The MoD later confirmed Dr Kelly was the source of BBC stories on Iraqi arms

HOON CAMPBELL RECALLED TO HUTTON PROBE

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon & former Downing St press chief Alastair Campbell have been recalled to give evidence to the Hutton inquiry. The two will appear before the probe into the death of Government weapons expert Dr David Kelly on the same day James Dingemans QC said. BBC correspondent Andrew Gilligan is also among those to be recalled. BBC director general Greg Dyke was among new witnesses appearing as the inquiry resumed after a 10-day break.

STRAW DEPLORES ATTACK ON LEADING IRAQI

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has condemned the "cowardly" assassination attempt on Aquila al-Hashimi one of three women on Iraq's Governing Council He said the Government "deplores" the shooting of Ms Hashimi outside her Baghdad home & supported her work to build a "free & democratic Iraq". Ms Hashimi had been due to fly to New York as part of an Iraqi delegation to the UN General Assembly next week. She is in a critical condition with serious abdominal injuries.

MURDER PROBE INTO DEATH OF JAZZ MAN

Police have launched a murder inquiry after a pensioner ` a respected figure in jazz circles ` died after being found outside his apartment block Timothy Colwell 65 collapsed in Howards Mead Pennington Hampshire on Thursday after an apparent assault by a number of youths. was pronounced dead. Saxophonist Mr Colwell once played with Kenny Ball & his Jazzmen & had his own band for 10 years.
