Britain Germany & France have agreed to work together on a Franco-German initiative for economic growth their leaders said after a summit in Berlin. They agreed they must deliver economic growth to European citizens without sacrificing budget discipline Tony Blair told a joint news conference. Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said the three will pursue the growth initiative France & Germany agreed on Thursday. It outlines 10 areas for investment ` from transport to telecommunicatons.

NEW IRAQ RESOLUTION "SOME TIME AWAY"

A new United Nations resolution on Iraq is unlikely to be approved soon President Bush has acknowledged. The US had been hoping the resolution which calls for more money & troops could be passed before he addresses the UN General Assembly next Tuesday. Mr Bush said work was continuing on reaching an agreement & the timetable had slipped. Tony Blair is due to meet the French and German leaders in Berlin this weekend to discuss policy on Iraq.

BLAIR SPANISH PM HOLDING TALKS ON IRAQ

Tony Blair is holding talks with Spanish premier Jose Maria Aznar in a bid to gain broader international involvement in rebuilding Iraq. Mr Aznar was one of the few leaders to support the US-UK invasion of Iraq. The talks at Chequers follow Mr Blair's summit in Berlin with German chancellor Gerhard Schroeder & French president Jacques Chirac. Mr Chirac made it clear that serious differences of approach remain over the extent of the UN's future role in Iraq.

US VETOES UN MOTION ON ARAFAT EXILE

The US has vetoed a resolution put to the UN Security Council demanding that Israel backs down from its threat to expel Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The US said the resolution was flawed because it did not go far enough in condemning the actions of militant Palestinian groups. The UK Bulgaria & Germany abstained from the Syrian-backed resolution. Labour chairman Ian McCartney has said losing the once-safe seat of Brent East is "very disappointing" for the party. STRAW DEPLORES ATTACK ON LEADING IRAQI

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has condemned the "cowardly" assassination attempt of Aquila al-Hashimi one of three women on Iraq's Governing Council He said the Government "deplores" the shooting of Ms Hashimi outside her Baghdad home & supported her work to build a "free & democratic Iraq". Ms Hashimi had been due to fly to New York as part of an Iraqi delegation to the UN General Assembly next week. She is in a critical condition with serious abdominal injuries.

BILL CLINTON UNVEILS MASSACRE CEMETERY

Former US president Bill Clinton has opened a memorial cemetery in the Bosnian town of Srebrenica for victims of Europe's worst massacre since WW11. Mr Clinton who was president when the Bosnian war finally ended in 1995 was invited to unveil the memorial by relatives of those who died. The Srebrenica memorial took a year to build & cost over £3m. It commemorates more than 7 000 Muslim men & boys executed by Bosnian Serb forces who overran the town.

WORLD COLA SALES "BEGINNING TO GO FLAT"

Sales of cola drinks could be losing their fizz as consumers try alternative soft drinks a report suggests. The global sales growth of cola by volume slowed from 3.8% in 1998 to 1.9% last year and could be down to 1.7% in 2007 analysts Datamonitor said. In comparison global sales growth of non-carbonated soft drinks were running at almost 9% a year it said. Britons drank the equivalent of 130 cans of cola each last year ` people in the US accounted for 278 on average.

PETROL TAX RISE "STEALTH TAX" ` TORIES

The Chancellor has been accused of "penalising" motorists to support public finances as it emerged petrol may rise by 5p a gallon from next month Shadow Transport spokesman Tim Collins said the rise stated in the April budget by Mr Brown but deferred by the war was a "stealth" tax on motorists. UK drivers already pay the highest fuel taxes in the developed world he said. The Treasury said the October 1 hike may not happen if oil prices stabilise but gave no date for a decision.
