KELLY UNDER INTENSE PRESSURE ` DAUGHTER

Weapons expert Dr David Kelly was like a man with "the world's pressures on his shoulders " his daughter has told the Hutton Inquiry into his death. Rachel Kelly 30 said she could see the hurt in her father's face when he was grilled before the the Foreign Affairs Select Committee. He had "gone ballistic" at the prospect of giving evidence live on TV she said It was now her wish she added that people "learned" to show more compassion to as a result of his death.

Thames Valley Police Assistant Chief Constable Michael Page said he was as confident as he could be Dr Kelly had been alone at the scene of his death. "I can find no evidence of involvement of a third party " he said. On Tuesday suicide expert Professor Keith Hawton said it was "well nigh certain" Dr Kelly had killed himself.

EXPERT KELLY OVERDOSED ON PAINKILLERS

"Quite a large overdose" of painkillers was present in Dr David Kelly's stomach after his apparent suicide the inquiry into the arms expert's death has heard. Forensic toxicologist Richard Allan said the levels of coproxamol & paracetamol were consistent with Dr Kelly's having taken 29 or 30 tablets. This was many times the therapeutic dose but was "somewhat lower" than would be expected to kill he said. The tablets would have been ingested an hour or so before death Mr Allan added

MP URGES CRACKDOWN TO HALT ARSON RISE

More than half of all fires that damage property or injure people are started deliberately research suggests. The number of malicious fires has risen to more than 123 000 a year since 1997 a study by Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesman Matthew Taylor indicates. More than 500 people have died since 1997 in arson incidents and the damage costs £2.2bn a year Mr Taylor said. The Government's budget of £4m a year to tackle the problem is inadequate & a crackdown is needed he warned.

Intelligence staff expressed concern that evidence in the Government's Iraq weapons dossier was "over-egged" the Hutton Inquiry has heard. Brian Jones said he headed a scientific section in the Defence Analysis Staff at the time the dossier was compiled. He said there had been fears statements about Iraq's ability to produce chemical weapons were too strong. Staff also queried the 45-minute claim saying it could have been deliberate Iraqi misinformation Dr Jones said.

HUGE CROWDS ATTEND AYATOLLAH'S FUNERAL

Around 400 000 Iraqis have surrounded a shrine as a symbolic burial took place for the leading Muslim cleric who died in a car bombing in Najaf. The mourners in Najaf wept & slapped their chests bidding farewell to Ayatollah Muhammad Baqr al-Hakim. The symbolic coffin contained items his family chose including a pen & watch ` few of his remains survived the blast The ayatollah an opponent of Saddam Hussein had recently returned to Iraq after more than 20 years in exile.

WORKMAN KILLED AFTER FALLING FROM ROOF

A workman has died after falling from a roof at a Halfords store in the Shettleston area of Glasgow. The 61-year-old who has not been named was working on the roof at 1130am today when he fell through the roof onto the shop below police said. He was taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary but was dead on arrival. The Health & Safety Executive has been made aware of the accident & a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

ARMY APOLOGISES TO "BEATEN UP" IRAQIS

The Army has apologised to 11 Iraqis injured by UK soldiers who mistakenly thought they had been involved in the deaths of six military policemen. The MoD said it had offered "goodwill payments" to those affected & would "look into" claims the group was beaten The Iraqis suffered minor injuries after being arrested in Majar al-Kabir ` where the policemen were killed. The Army is said to have offered its "humblest apologies" in an open letter to the people of the town.

MAN QUIZZED OVER RUNAWAY TEENAGE GIRL

A 46-year-old divorcee who disappeared with a schoolgirl has been arrested police say. David Milner from Gillingham in Kent is being questioned about the disappearence of the 14-year-old who went missing from Kent last Thursday. The pair were discovered asleep in a car in a lay-by outside Berriedale near Wick Caithness by police. Milner was escorted by police from Scotland & is being held at Chatham police station in Kent.
