FOUR SOLDIERS 10 REBELS DIE IN KASHMIR

Four Indian soldiers have died in an attack by Islamic militants on an army camp in Indian-administered Kashmir. At least three others were hurt at the base in Nowgam north of Srinagar as rebels fired shots & hurled grenades. Elsewhere in Kashmir Indian security forces shot dead 10 suspected Islamic militants in three incidents overnight. The deaths bring to 158 the number of killed in Kashmir in an upsurge of violence since the shooting by Indian troops of rebel Gazi Baba on August 30.

A US soldier was killed & three more wounded when their convoy ran over a bomb in the Iraqi town of Fallujah. The blast happened at around 8am local time in the troubled town west of Baghdad a US spokesman said. The incident follows the funeral of nine Iraqi security personnel in Fallujah who died after being mistakenly attacked by US troops. Meanwhile US Secretary of State Colin Powell has arrived in Baghdad for talks on the future of occupied Iraq.

US TROOPS ARREST SEVEN IN DESERT RAID

More than 100 US troops & Iraqi police backed by attack helicopters have stormed a desert settlement in a crackdown on robbery & carjacking. Seven suspected car thieves were miles north-east of Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit. US forces said the gang had carried out kidnappings & rapes run illegal checkpoints & carjackings. There has been a recent upsurge in gang activity in this part of central Iraq.

US SORRY FOR "FRIENDLY FIRE" SHOOTINGS

Eight Iraqi policemen & a Jordanian guard were killed by "friendly fire" on Friday the US army has confirmed. Lieutenant Colonel George Krivo expressed deep regrets & apologised to families who lost loved ones in the incident at Fallujah west of Baghdad. But Lt Col Krivo said US soldiers had returned fire only when they were shot at from a lorry of unknown origin. Local officials said police came under US fire while they were chasing suspected criminals.

POWELL MEETS WITH OFFICIALS IN BAGHDAD

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has met US commanders & Iraqi officials in Baghdad on his first visit to Iraq since Saddam Hussein was overthrown. Mr Powell said he was encouraged by progress toward self-rule but that terrorists were trying to infiltrate Iraq to undermine that goal. After meeting Mr Powell Iraq's foreign minister said he hoped a legitimate government would be elected by mid-2004 Colin Powell has refused to set a timetable for self-rule in Iraq.

LOCKERBIE FATHER SAYS RELEASE MEGRAHI

The father of a man who died in the Lockerbie disaster has said that the Libyan man convicted of carrying out the bombing should now be freed. Abdelbasset al-Megrahi is being held in Barlinnie jail in Glasgow. Martin Cadman whose son Bill died in the 1988 bombing was speaking after the decision of the United Nations to lift sanctions imposed on Libya. Mr Cadman said it was clear that al- Megrahi was acting on the orders of the Libyan state & should be released.

EXPLOSIVES DEFUSED AT N IRELAND SCHOOLS

Explosive devices found at two schools in Northern Ireland have been defused by Army bomb disposal teams. St Patrick's College in Dungiven & St Mary's High School in Limavady were evacuated while the expert teams made the devices safe. Police blamed loyalists for the pipe bombs which contained explosives but no detonator. A number of items have been removed for forensic examination while a large security operation is also taking place

The five permanent members of the UN Security Council have ended talks in Geneva without agreeing a timetable for the handover of power in Iraq. Secretary General Kori Annan said the five agreed power should be transferred to the Iraqis as soon as possible. POWELL REJECTS KILLING ARAFAT AS OPTION

Colin Powell has rejected an Israeli suggestion that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat could be killed. Killing Mr Arafat would "cause rage" in many parts of the world & the US did not support his elimination or his exile the US Secretary of State said. Israel's deputy prime minister earlier listed killing Mr Arafat as an option after Israel's cabinet decided to expel the Palestinian leader from the region. Israel indirectly blames Mr Arafat for terror attacks against its civilians.
