MAJORITY NOW SAY WAR UNJUSTIFIED ` POLL

More than 50% of Britons now believe the war in Iraq was unjustified a poll of 1 002 people suggests. Some 53% of people in the ICM/Guardian poll said they did not now back the war when in July 51% supported it & 63% backed it in April as the war began The figures from telephone interviews between September 19 & 21 show for the first time a majority of respondents against the invasion. But support for Labour ` at 35% ` is still five points ahead of the Tories.

"NO EVIDENCE" OF WEAPONS FOUND IN IRAQ

A leaked draft of a report by experts searching Iraq for evidence of weapons of mass destruction apparently says that so far none has been found. A source in the US administration has told journalist Andrew Neil an interim report will say that not even "minute" amounts of material have been uncovered However the source said the report would claim Saddam Hussein had tried to deceive & hinder the UN weapons team. The Iraq Survey Group is due to publish its report next month.

REPORT INTO IRAQ WEAPONS "SPECULATIVE"

The suggestion that no evidence has been found to support claims Iraq had weapons of mass destruction has been described as speculation by Jack Straw. The Foreign Secretary refused to say if he had seen a draft copy of the Iraq Survey Group's report stressing only that it was "as yet unpublished". However he explained that the case for military action in Iraq had been argued out at the United Nations. The international community came to a view that Iraq posed a threat he said.

EX-IRAQI DEFENCE MINISTER SURRENDERS

Iraq's former defence minister Sultan Hashim Ahmed has surrendered to US forces in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul the US military has confirmed. Ahmed is number 27 and Eight of Hearts on Washington's list of most wanted members of the former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's regime. The surrender follows several days of negotiations between local mediator Dawood Bagistani & the Americans. The US had promised to treat the Ahmed "with dignity" if he handed himself in.

FORMER IRAQI MINISTER GIVEN IMMUNITY

Saddam Hussein's defence minister has been given immunity from prosecution after surrendering to US forces last week the White House has confirmed. Sultan Hashim Ahmed surrendered to troops in the northern city of Mosul on Friday. He was number 27 on Washington's most-wanted list of Iraqis US officials said they had high hopes he would offer significant information on Iraq's alleged weapons programmes. An interim US report on Iraq's weapons capability is expected soon.
