I'M INNOCENT INSISTS JAILED FRAUD HEAD

A headmistress convicted of stealing up to £500 000 from her school has said she was "naive & stupid" but innocent Colleen McCabe 51 was jailed for five years after spending a fortune on fine restaurants jewellery & holidays. But she has told the BBC she used the credit card of St John Rigby College in West Wickham south-east London in the agreed way & paid the money back. Her spree left the school rat-infested and virtually bookless. McCabe is appealing against her sentence.

The Government used Dr David Kelly as a pawn in its battle with the BBC his Inquiry into the scientist's death. In his closing speech Jeremy Gompertz QC singled out Defence Secretary Geoff Mr Hoon's denials that he was involved in a strategy to name Dr Kelly as a BBC source had been exposed as "hypocrisy" by Alastair Campbell's diary entries. Mr Gompertz also said the "culture of the media" played a part in the death.

HUTTON HEARS LAWYERS' CLOSING ADDRESSES

Lord Hutton has spent the day hearing final submissions from lawyers representing all sides involved in the inquiry into Dr David Kelly's death. Counsel to the inquiry James Dingemans QC said overwhelming evidence suggested Dr Kelly had taken his own life. And he said it was clear Dr Kelly "was not aware of the media maelstrom which was about descend on him" after he was named as the source for a BBC story. Lord Hutton said he hoped to release his report in November or December.

DEATH AT SPECTOR'S HOME "WAS HOMICIDE"

A Los Angeles coroner has ruled that the death of a woman at music producer Phil Spector's home was "homicide". Actress Lana Clarkson 40 died in February from gunshots to her head & person a coroner's spokesman said. Mr Spector 62 told a magazine in June that she shot herself in his foyer and he had never seen her before. He was arrested after Ms Clarkson's death but released on bail. Public prosecutors are reviewing the case.

KELLY "NOT WARNED OF Q&A" NAMING BRIEF

The "right steps" were taken with regard to the welfare of Dr David Kelly Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has told the Hutton Inquiry into his death. Dr Kelly was "taken through" the MoD warned about the Q&A technique which led to his being named Mr Hoon said. This was not necessary Mr Hoon said as Dr Kelly had been repeatedly warned his name would become publicly known. The MoD later confirmed Dr Kelly was the source of BBC stories on Iraqi arms

HOON CALLS FOR LABOUR SUPPORT OVER IRAQ

Geoff Hoon has defended his decision to committ troops in Iraq & called for Labour to support a military presence there until stability is restored. Real progress was being made to restore services & security in Iraq but help was needed the Defence Secretary said. At the Bournemouth party conference he said the war was not undertaken lightly and all arguments were considered. Mr Hoon urged party members to overcome their differences & "agree on a shared vision for the future of Iraq".

MILOSEVIC FACES FRESH MURDER CHARGES

Former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic has been indicted with ordering the murder & attempted murder of two key political opponents. The charges were announced by a special prosecutor for the Belgrade government. The body of former Serb leader Ivan Stambolic abducted in Belgrade in 2000 was found earlier this year. Milosevic already on trial for war crimes in the Hague is also accused of ordering the attempted murder of opposition leader Vuk Draskovic.

KENNEDY SAYS GOVERNMENT "SHOP-SOILED"

has urged party activists to be more "shop-soiled" Labour Government. In his keynote speech at the party's Brighton conference Mr Kennedy said the Hutton Inquiry gave a "devastating indictment" of Labour in power. War in Iraq failing public services and soaring council tax bills had left voters in despair he said. His party was the "only credible challenge" to the Government he added.

ELDERLY MENTAL PATIENTS PUT AT RISK

The care of elderly patients on a mental health ward was unacceptable & put them at risk an inquiry has found. Conditions on Rowan Ward at Withington Hospital Manchester may not be unique the Commission for Health Improvement also said. Its investigation followed allegations of physical & emotional abuse of patients by staff at the ward. The CHI was told the ward had become a "forgotten service" after other mental health facilities were moved elsewhere.

JAW IS "EUROPE'S OLDEST HUMAN RELIC"

A 35 000-year-old jawbone found by potholers in Romania is the oldest human relic discovered in Europe scientists have said. Professor Eric Trinkaus from Washington University St Louis said other bones from the same cave in the Carpathian mountains appeared to be the same age. They document what humans looked like when they migrated to Europe he said. But the large jaws & teeth suggest the humans interbred with Neanderthals who already lived in Europe he added.

CRISIS WARNING OVER ANTIBIOTICS' MISUSE

Inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics could lead to thousands of deaths from treatable illnesses a prominent scientist has warned. University of Ulster Professor Hugh McGavock says "gross overprescribing" by doctors is enabling drug-resistant disease strains to proliferate. By 2015 all antibiotics may be useless he told the BBC. Government adviser Roger Finch said the development of new types of antibiotics should help avert such a crisis.
