A headmistress convicted of stealing up to £500 000 from her school has said she was "naive & stupid" but innocent Colleen McCabe 51 was jailed for five years after spending a fortune on fine restaurants jewellery & holidays. But she has told the BBC she used the credit card of St John Rigby College in West Wickham south-east London in the agreed way & paid the money back. Her spree left the school rat-infested and virtually bookless. McCabe is appealing against her sentence.

A Los Angeles coroner has ruled that the death of a woman at music producer Phil Spector's home was "homicide". Actress Lana Clarkson 40 died in February from gunshots to her head & person a coroner's spokesman said. Mr Spector 62 told a magazine in June that she shot herself in his foyer and he had never seen her before. He was arrested after Ms Clarkson's death but released on bail. Geoff Hoon has defended his decision to committ troops in Iraq & called for Labour to support a military presence there until stability is restored. A 35 000-year-old jawbone found by potholers in Romania is the oldest human relic discovered in Europe scientists have said. Inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics could lead to thousands of deaths from treatable illnesses a prominent scientist has warned. University of Ulster Professor Hugh McGavock says "gross overprescribing" by doctors is enabling drug-resistant disease strains to proliferate. By 2015 all antibiotics may be useless he told the BBC.
