SEVEN US TROOPS WOUNDED IN IRAQ ATTACKS

Seven US soldiers have been wounded in attacks in Iraq the US Army has said. Four were hurt when their convoy was attacked with small arms fire grenades and explosives near Kayarah close to the northern city of Mosul. Two others were attacked near Saddam Hussein's home town of Tikrit on Friday and a seventh was hurt in an ambush on a convoy near Muqdadiyah northern Iraq US Army explosives experts defused a mine on a diesel pipeline near Kayarah a military spokesman added.

ISRAEL VOWS TO HUNT DOWN HAMAS LEADERS

Hamas leaders are "marked for death" and Israel will "hunt them relentlessly" Ariel Sharon has vowed. The Israeli prime minister was speaking after the army failed in an attempt to kill senior members of the militant Islamic group in an attack in Gaza City Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin was slightly injured in the attack. The Islamic militant group has vowed to avenge the attack & Israeli security forces have been placed on a heightened state of alert.

120mph HURRICANE FABIAN LASHES BERMUDA

The most powerful hurricane to hit Bermuda in 50 years has slammed into the British dependency snapping palm trees & cutting power to 25 000 homes Hurricane Fabian reached the western part of the island on Friday afternoon with winds of up to 120mph. The telephone service was down in some areas & hospitals were relying on generators for power. The Bermuda Weather Service said winds thunderstorms & possible tornadoes would last into Saturday.

MISSILES FIRED AT US PLANE IN BAGHDAD

Two surface-to-air missiles have been fired at a American transport plane near Baghdad airport a British military spokesman has said. Neither missile came close to the C17 plane which was flying at 12 000ft. Another heat-seeking missile was fired a week ago in a similar attack but exploded 1km behind the aircraft. The attack on Saturday occurred hours before US Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld arrived in the area but a spokesman said no link was apparent.

CAR DRAGS ROBBERY VICTIM HALF A MILE

A robbery victim has suffered serious head injuries when he was apparently dragged half a mile through central London by a car Police believe the victim had been robbed of a large quantity of gold jewellery before being dragged through The vehicle will have passed many people in the Farringdon area on Friday afternoon officers believed. The car a white Volkswagen Golf was later found elsewhere burnt out.

LORD LUCAN MYSTERY SOLVED SAYS AUTHOR

A former Scotland Yard detective claims to have uncovered the fate of fugitive peer Lord Lucan almost 30 years after he disappeared. Lord Lucan went missing in 1974 when his children's nanny was found battered to death at his home in London Duncan MacLaughlin says he died in 1996 in Goa India of drink-related illnesses. He had lived there for many years under the name Barry Halpin. The claims from his book Dead Lucky are reported in The Sunday Telegraph.

MAN DIES AS DISNEY RIDE RUNS OFF RAILS

A man has been killed & 10 injured as a roller-coaster left the rails at Disneyland in California. Those who were hurt in the accident at the Anaheim park included a nine-year- old officials said. It happened when the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was derailed while the train went through a dark tunnel. "At this point we don't believe sabotage was involved but we are going to look at everything " an Anaheim police sergeant commented.

THREE ARRESTED OVER WOMAN'S BOAT DEATH

Two women & a man have been arrested over the death of a woman after a river boat capsized during a carnival. The woman died after a 20ft cabin cruiser overturned during the event on the River Severn at Stourport-on-Severn in Worcestershire on Saturday evening. She was pulled out unconscious but other people were rescued from the boat The three people arrested are being questioned at Kidderminster police station West Mercia Police said.

CHEMICAL FIRM PENSION STRIKE SUSPENDED

Staff at a chemical plant have agreed to suspend strike action over a pension dispute union officials have said. Over 450 workers at Rhodia in Oldbury West Midlands were due to stage a 24- hour walkout on Friday over the closure of their pension scheme to new staff. The firm's management has offered to keep the final salary scheme open to current members until 2012 in a bid to head off further walkouts. The GMB union said the deal may prove an "acceptable" compromise.

NHS BAN "CONFINED WOMAN TO WHEELCHAIR"

A disabled woman has slept in her wheelchair for over a year because the local NHS trust banned staff from lifting her the High Court has heard. Keynes Bucks has multiple sclerosis and cannot get in & out of bed alone. Nurses who assisted her were withdrawn by Milton Keynes Primary Care Trust who said her spasms could injure them. Mrs Wolstenholme's counsel argued too much weight was attached to the carers' needs. The case continues in October.

POLICE TOLD TO IMPROVE GRASSROOTS LINKS

Chief constables from across England and Wales have been told by the Home Secretary to strike up better relationships with local communities. All 43 chiefs had gathered in central London for the latest in a series of summits with David Blunkett. Reforms should come from grassroots level rather than Whitehall he said. Community-based policing is especially effective against "anti-social behaviour & low-level crime" Mr Blunkett added.
