"FATHER OF THE H-BOMB" TELLER DIES

US atomic scientist Edward Teller widely known as the "father of the H- bomb" has died at the age of 95. Teller played a key role in US defence and energy policies for more than half a century championing the development of the atomic & hydrogen bombs. He was also a strong advocate of nuclear power & the Strategic Defense Initiative missile defence system dubbed "Star Wars". His long career saw him influence the policies of several US presidents.

Geoff Hoon has been criticised by MPs for failing to give full details of intelligence staff concerns about the contents of the Iraqi weapons dossier. The Intelligence & Security Committee said it was "disturbed" the Defence Secretary had not revealed the doubts. It added the MoD's failure to do so was "unhelpful & potentially misleading". ISC chairman Ann Taylor said it was felt Mr Hoon "did not lie" & her committee's report on the Government dossier did not call for him to resign.

Ps "TO CLAIM HOON MISLED THEM ON IRAQ"

Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon is to be accused of misleading the Intelligence and Security Committee over the Iraq weapons dossier reports say. committee findings allege he denied to the ISC that Defence Intelligence Staff (DIS) were unhappy with the dossier. But Whitehall sources have told the BBC Mr Hoon volunteered information that there were disputes within the DIS. The committee has examined claims that Iraq's threat was exaggerated.

HOON REJECTS CALLS TO QUIT OVER DOSSIER

The Defence Secretary has rejected Tory calls for his resignation saying he had not meant to be "anything other than open" over the Iraq dossier. He regretted "any misunderstandings" on the 45-minutes claim Geoff Hoon said after criticisms of him in a report. He had told the Commons intelligence committee two of his staff suggested "tightening up" the dossier's wording. But he acknowledged it would have been "helpful" if he had mentioned that they had put their concerns in writing.

The Government had failed to deal with a "cash crisis" in schools the shadow education secretary said. down those who relied on public services as well as those who worked for them Damien Green said. Education Minister David Miliband said there were 25 000 more teachers than in 1997 & 80 000 more support staff. "We recognise there have been serious problems & that is why we want to overcome them" he conceded.

IRAQ DOSSIER NOT SEXED-UP ` MPs' REPORT

The Government's dossier on Iraq's arms was "not sexed-up by Alastair Campbell or anyone else" the Intelligence & Security Committee has said. But the way the claim Saddam Hussein could launch chemical weapons within 45 minutes was presented was "unhelpful" to understanding the issue it said. It had not been made clear he was not considered a current or imminent threat to mainland Britain the ISC added. The committee examined claims that the dossier had exaggerated Iraq's threat.

MONDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

Mahmoud Abbas quitting as Palestinian PM must not be allowed to send the peace process "back to square one" Foreign Secretary Jack Straw insisted. Mr Straw said he regretted Mr Abbas's resignation as "we had confidence" in him & his efforts to deliver the commitments of the peace "road map". Attacks on coalition forces will not deter Britain from its overall goal in Iraq Mr Straw pledged. It is to hand over sovereignty to the Iraqi people "as quickly as possible".

IRAQI POLICE KILLED BY US FRIENDLY FIRE

At least eight Iraqi police are thought to have died when US troops mistakenly opened fire on their vehicles as they chased a group of thieves in a car. The troops started firing when both vehicles failed to stop near a hospital in the town of Fallujah west of Baghdad witnesses said. The US military said it was still trying to clarify what had happened. It has confirmed that two soldiers were killed & seven wounded in a shoot-out during a US raid in nearby Ramadi.
