BLOODY SUNDAY SOLDIER DEMANDS SCREENING

An ex-soldier threatened with contempt of court for refusing to appear at the Bloody Sunday inquiry on Wednesday is to apply to be screened from the public Soldier L told his lawyers he was fearful but prepared to co-operate if his request was granted. The Saville Inquiry at Central Hall Westminster had set off High Court proceedings which could see him jailed. He is due to give evidence to the probe into the deaths of 13 unarmed civilians in Londonderry on January 30 1972.

The Liberal Democrats have been

celebrating their victory in the Brent East by-election after a 29% swing from Labour. Sarah Teather 29 overturned a 13 047 majority from the last election to beat Labour's Robert Evans by 1 118 votes. She polled 8 158 votes Mr Evans 7 040 and the Tories' Uma Fernandes won 3 368 votes. The turnout was 36.42%. The poll followed the death of MP Paul Daisley. It is Labour's first loss of a seat in a by-election for 15 years.

JADE DEATH DEALER JAILED FOR SUPPLYING

Wayne Wood whose ecstasy tablets killed 10-year-old Jade Slack has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for dealing class A drugs. Wood 22 of Galgate Lancashire was earlier cleared of Jade's manslaughter but pleaded guilty to three counts of supply & one of intent to supply. In mitigation Wood was described as not "evil" but "stupid misguided". Passing sentence Mr Justice Morland told Wood: "The death of Jade is no relevance to the sentence I pass."

WEDNESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

Mr Blair denied intelligence material not included in dossiers made public on Iraq undermined the case for war. Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy accused Mr Blair of "withholding" important information which would have influenced people's views. Mr Blair retorted: "I don't accept it would have undermined our case at all." He went on to urge Bob Russell (Lib Dem Colchester) to await the outcome of the Brent East by-election before presuming a win.

The Lib Dems' Brent East by-election victory vindicates party leader Charles Kennedy's opposition to the Iraq war the Commons' newest MP has said. Sarah Teather who won the seat from Labour said voters wanted Tony Blair to listen to them & deliver. At 29 she becomes the youngest MP in Westminster & she said her win was "a wonderful wonderful result". She added: "The tide may be turning against Tony Blair & New Labour but it remains far out for the Tories."

OPPOSITION PARTIES SLAM LORDS PROPOSALS

Tories & Lib Dems have united to condemn the Government's "undemocratic" proposals for Lords reform. Shadow attorney general Bill Cash branded them a "fundamental shift away from democracy while Lib Dem Paul Tyler called them "an unpalatable mess" Mr Cash said: "Anyone would think the constitution was the personal chattel of the Prime Minister & his cronies." He said the Government was engaged in "short-term political gerrymandering" not genuine long-term reform.

MAN SETS FIRE TO HIMSELF IN HOSPITAL

A 29-year-old man is critically ill after setting fire to himself at a hospital in West Lothian. The man who has not been named had been a patient in St John's Hospital in Livingston & had discharged himself. Patients & staff looked on in horror as the man walked into reception doused his clothes with petrol & set fire to himself. It is understood the man who is now in the hospital's burn unit had a history of trying to harm himself.
