BOY FOUR DIES IN IRAQ SUICIDE BOMBING

A car bomb in Kurdish northern Iraq has killed a four-year-old boy & injured 47 others including six Americans. A suicide bomber also died in the blast outside offices in Irbil used by the US Defence Department to house staff. It is the first time such a large bomb has been detonated in northern Iraq since the end of major hostilities was declared by the US four months ago. Meanwhile one US soldier was killed and another wounded in an attack on their vehicle north-east of Baghdad.

At least eight Iraqi police are thought to have died when US troops mistakenly opened fire on their vehicles as they chased a group of thieves in a car. The troops started firing when both vehicles failed to stop near a hospital in the town of Fallujah west of Baghdad witnesses said. The US military said it was still trying to clarify what had happened. It has confirmed that two soldiers were killed & seven wounded in a shoot-out during a US raid in nearby Ramadi.

US SORRY FOR "FRIENDLY FIRE" SHOOTINGS

Eight Iraqi policemen & a Jordanian guard were killed by "friendly fire" on Friday the US army has confirmed. Lieutenant Colonel George Krivo expressed deep regrets & apologised to families who lost loved ones in the incident at Fallujah west of Baghdad. But Lt Col Krivo said US soldiers had returned fire only when they were shot at from a lorry of unknown origin. Local officials said police came under US fire while they were chasing suspected criminals.

POLICE HOLD FOUR IN PETROL DEATH PROBE

Two women & two men have been arrested by police investigating the murder of a man who was doused in petrol & set alight. Wayne Trotter 30 was left screaming in agony after the attack near his home in Borehamwood Herts in December 2002 and died a few hours later in hospital. The women aged 19 & 26 and a man aged 24 all from Borehamwood were arrested on suspicion of murder. A 33-year-old man who was bailed in May was also taken into custody.

MUSIC STAR CASH DIES IN HOSPITAL AT 71

Country music star Johnny Cash has died from diabetes complications in a manager has said. Cash 71 had been released from hospital on Wednesday after two weeks' treatment for a stomach complaint. Known as The Man in Black Cash was a towering figure in American music spanning country rock & folk. He sang of tough fighting men & alcohol & found fame with songs such as I Walk the Line & A Boy Named Sue.

HOON DOSSIER ROLE "DISTURBS" COMMITTEE

Geoff Hoon has been criticised by MPs for failing to give full details of intelligence staff concerns about the contents of the Iraqi weapons dossier. The Intelligence & Security Committee said it was "disturbed" the Defence Secretary had not revealed the doubts. It added the MoD's failure to do so was "unhelpful & potentially misleading". ISC chairman Ann Taylor said it was felt Mr Hoon "did not lie" & her committee's report on the Government dossier did not call for him to resign.

SISTERS HACKED TO DEATH BY BROTHERS

Three brothers hacked their two sisters to death in an "honour killing" a day after Jordan rejected tougher sentences for such crimes it is reported. SELBY DISASTER DEAD UNLAWFULLY KILLED

The six passengers & four rail workers who died in the Selby train crash were unlawfully killed an inquest jury has decided. The 10 men died on February 28 2001 when a GNER express train derailed & collided with a freight train. The jury sitting in Harrogate heard the crash was triggered when Gary Hart's Land Rover plunged off the M62 onto the line near Great Heck N Yorks. Hart is serving five years in jail for causing death by dangerous driving.

EIGHT DIE IN COLOMBIA HORSE BOMB ATTACK

At least eight people were killed & 15 were injured when a horse loaded with explosives blew up in a crowded village market in Colombia. The army blamed the blast in Chita some 160 miles northeast of Bogota on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia leftist rebel group. The military arrested a woman whom they suspect of letting the horse loose. The market was crowded with peasant families including many children. The target of the bomb was not clear.

WEAPONS STOP-AND-SEARCH AT SEA BEGINS

An international military exercise aimed at intercepting shipments of weapons of mass destruction has begun off the north-east coast of Australia. Naval forces from the US Japan France and Australia took part in the first of a series of exercises to search ships suspected of trafficking weapons. SOHAM OFFICER CHARGED OVER PORN TRIAL

Soham detective Brian Stevens has been charged with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice at his trial last month on child pornography charges. Crown Prosecution Service employee Louise Austin 32 has been charged with the same offence. Both have been released on police bail. Mr Stevens is due to appear before Bedford magistrates on September 16. Mr Stevens 42 an ex-liaison officer to schoolgirl Jessica Chapman's family was cleared of the child porn charges.

SCOTTISH COAST TO HOST NATO WAR GAMES

A Nato training exercise involving troops from 14 countries is to take place off the coast of Scotland. The operation will feature 50 warships and submarines 800 troops fighter planes & military helicopters. Exercise Northern Lights 03 is part of several planned operations by the new Nato Response Force which is expected to be operational by October 2004. The mission which runs from September Stranraer Dumfries & Galloway.

US MARINE 21 JAILED FOR OKINAWA RAPE

A Japanese court has jailed a 21-year- old US marine for three years & six months for beating & raping a woman on the southern island of Okinawa. Lance Corporal Jose Torres had admitted raping the 19-year-old on a roadside after meeting her in a restaurant. Okinawa is strategically located close to the Korean peninsula & China and hosts about two-thirds of the 47 000 US troops in Japan. US soldiers have committed a string of crimes in the area in recent years.
