MORE BRITISH TROOPS FLY TO SOUTH IRAQ

Another 50 British troops are thought to have landed in southern Iraq taking the total number of reinforcements this weekend to more than 100. The soldiers from the second battalion Light Infantry took off from Cyprus on Saturday night. A BBC correspondent says their duties are likely to include guarding oil pipelines in the south of Iraq. It is thought the Ministry of Defence will announce on Monday that up to 3 000 more British troops will be sent.

Two extra battalions are to be sent to Iraq to bolster the 10 000 British forces there Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has said. Some 1 200 troops will head to the Basra area in the next few days with more to follow in the next few weeks. The forces will be from 2nd Battalion The Light Infantry & 1st Battalion The Royal Green Jackets. Mr Hoon said the extra troops would stay until November when requirements would be reviewed.

IRAQ TROOPS NOT "KNEEJERK" MOVE ` No 10

The decision to send more British troops to Iraq is not a "kneejerk response" to recent attacks Tony Blair's official spokesman has said. He said the deployment of some 2 200 troops was a "detailed targeted response" to improve Iraq's security infrastructure & politics. The key aim is to "put the Iraqi people back in charge of their own affairs" the Number 10 spokesman said. It was vital to prevent "terrorists" from halting progress he added.

RUMSFELD FLIES IN TO KABUL AMID CLASHES

US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld is due to arrive in Afghanistan following a recent upsurge in violence there. During his previous visit in May he declared an end to major combat operations in that country. Mr Rumsfeld's trip coincides with a major US & Afghan operation against suspected Taleban fighters in the south and the east. The sudden rise in attacks in recent weeks has led to fears that supporters of the former Taleban may be regrouping

NO 10 "MADE KELLY'S LIFE HELL" ` SHORT

Abuse of power by Downing Street & the Ministry of Defence drove weapons expert David Kelly to suicide claims ex-Cabinet minister Clare Short. Ms Short who quit her ministerial post over the Iraq war says No 10 had made Dr Kelly's life "hell". She also accuses Tony Blair of "a lack of respect for proper procedure" beneath his "smiling demeanour". In The Independent on Sunday Ms Short adds that "spin merchants" have "corroded the Government's integrity".
