THREE HELD ON INDIA DEATH BLAST CHARGES

Indian police have charged two men & a woman over car bombings that killed 52 people in Mumbai (Bombay) last week. The blasts which injured another 150 occurred minutes apart at the landmark Gateway of India arch & a busy shopping centre. The driver of the taxi believed to be involved in the Gateway blast allegedly told police he was hired by two men & a woman for a two-day sightseeing tour. India has blamed the attacks on pro- Pakistan Muslim militants from Kashmir.

EXPERT "WELL-NIGH CERTAIN" OF SUICIDE

A consultant psychiatrist has told the Hutton inquiry it was "well nigh certain" David Kelly committed suicide. Oxford suicide researcher Keith Hawton said all the evidence pointed to the weapons expert taking his own life. He said the main causes of the suicide could have been Dr Kelly's loss of self -esteem from feeling he lost people's trust & dismay at being exposed. A neighbour of Dr Kelly ` apparently the last person to see him alive ` said he had seemed normal before his death.

TWO US MILITARY POLICE KILLED IN IRAQ

The US-led occupiers in Iraq have confirmed that two American military police were killed when their vehicle hit an explosive device in Baghdad. Another American officer was wounded in Monday's attack on the southern outskirts of the Iraqi capital. The deaths take to 67 the number of US soldiers killed in attacks in Iraq since President George W Bush declared major operations over on May 1. A further 78 have died in accidents or other circumstances unrelated to combat

INQUIRY INTO PREGNANCY DISCRIMINATION

The Equal Opportunities Commission is launching a two-year inquiry into the extent of pregnancy discrimination at work ` the first of its kind in the UK. The EOC said its helpline received more calls from women facing pregnancy- related problems than any other subject It had heard "quite appalling cases of women being demoted disciplined or even sacked simply for having a baby". Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt warned that employers discriminating against pregnant women were breaking the law.

DOG FOUND KELLY'S BODY SLUMPED BY TREE

A volunteer dog handler working with a police search team has told the Hutton Inquiry how she found Dr David Kelly's body slumped against a tree. Louise Holmes said her dog Brock picked up the scent 200 yards into the wood & barked when he found the body. Ms Holmes said: "He was at the tree base. His left arm had a lot of blood on it. There was nothing I could do." Arms expert Dr Kelly died in July after he was named as a source of claims that reports on Iraq were exaggerated.

CLERIC BA'ASYIR JAILED FOR FOUR YEARS

Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir has been jailed by an Indonesian court for four years for subversion after being cleared of treason. He was on trial for allegedly ordering the bombings of churches in 2000 in which 19 people died and plotting to kill President Megawati Sukarnoputri. The Jakarta judges said it had not been legally proven that Mr Ba'asyir was the leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah group. Mr Ba'asyir said he planned to launch an appeal against the verdict.

GOUT "MAY BE SIGN OF HEART PROBLEMS"

Gout may be an early warning sign of life-threatening heart disease new research suggests. Researchers found middle-aged patients with the joint condition were more likely to have high blood pressure raised cholesterol levels & diabetes. The Dutch research team said GPs should examine patients with gout to check for signs of cardiovascular disease. There are about 250 000 sufferers of gout in the UK & it is a common cause of inflammatory joint disease.

TREATMENT FEAR FOR YOUNG STROKE VICTIMS

Young stroke victims in Scotland face big variations in treatment across the country a report has revealed. The report by researchers at Glasgow University highlighted problems faced by younger victims treated in a system aimed mainly at older people. Strokes hit more than 4 000 people of working age every year according to Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland. CHS said not all younger victims were taken to specialised stroke units for their initial treatment.
