LLOYDS TSB FINED OVER BOND MIS-SELLING

Banking group Lloyds TSB has been fined #1.9m by the City watchdog for mis-selling bonds to consumers. It will also have to pay about £98m in compensation relating to 22 500 sales of its Extra Income & Growth Plan. The Financial Services Authority said the company failed to ensure the high income equity-linked bond was suitable for the circumstances of each investor. It also said that it did not emphasise the need to have balanced portfolios and retain sufficient liquid resources.

NETWORK RAIL LAUNCHES PROBE INTO JARVIS

Network Rail has begun an investigation into maintenance contractor Jarvis after a series of accidents. A derailment at King's Cross in London last week ` after which Jarvis admitted staff had not secured a signal at red ` resembled a derailment last November. Jarvis is also being probed over the fatal Potters Bar crash. Network Rail has quizzed Jarvis bosses about the company's working practices and is to probe all aspects of the firm from management to training.

Ps' COMMITTEE ATTACKS FAT CAT PAY-OFFS

There is genuine cause for concern abouu the level of pay-offs given to company directors in the UK a committee of MPs has warned. The Trade & Industry Select Committee rejected the argument from business that high pay was needed in order to It added that directors' notice periods should be the same as for the rest of the population. However it has stopped short of calling for a change in the law.

JUNGLE ESCAPE BRITON FEARS FOR HOSTAGES

The British student who escaped a gang of kidnappers in Colombia has returned to the UK & warned that he fears for the safety of those still held hostage. Matthew Scott 19 from Clapham in south London was kidnapped along with seven others including Mark Henderson from Harrogate Yorks on September 12. He survived alone without food for 12 days in the jungle after his escape & before being picked up by local police. Speaking at Heathrow he said he was very concerned for his fellow hostages.

FATAL BOMB AT US TV STATION'S IRAQ BASE

An explosion at a Baghdad hotel has killed a Somali employee & left two other people injured. The bomb was placed near the generator of the Aike hotel where the US television network NBC is based. A dozen NBC staffers were inside the building when the explosion occurred and a Canadian soundman was injured by flying glass. a passing convoy in the city of Mosul.

FUNDING TO HELP HOSPITAL STAFF LEVELS

Health officials are hoping staffing problems at Berwick Infirmary may soon be solved thanks to new funding. Northumbria Healthcare Trust has secured an additional £1.7m to increase staffing levels at a number of hospitals including Berwick. Wards at the Infirmary have been closed temporarily in recent months because of insufficient staff. A spokesman for the trust confirmed they will now be recruiting as a matter of urgency.
