FEWER DELAYS ON UK SPRING FLIGHTS ` CAA

Passengers suffered fewer delays flying to & from major UK airports this spring compared with the same period last year it has been announced. Some 78% of scheduled flights in April- June were on time up from 75% last year the Civil Aviation Authority said The average delay fell by two minutes to 12 minutes it said. The CAA statistics covered flights to and from Heathrow Gatwick Birmingham Luton Stansted Manchester Edinburgh Newcastle Glasgow & London City.

NETWORK RAIL LAUNCHES PROBE INTO JARVIS

Network Rail has begun an investigation into maintenance contractor Jarvis after a series of accidents. A derailment at King's Cross in London last week ` after which Jarvis admitted staff had not secured a signal at red ` resembled a derailment last November. Jarvis is also being probed over the fatal Potters Bar crash. Network Rail has quizzed Jarvis bosses about the company's working practices and is to probe all aspects of the firm from management to training.

KENNEDY STARTS CAMPAIGN FOR "GREY VOTE"

Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy has launched a bid for the "grey vote" by appointing a taskforce to sell his party's policy to older people. The Taskforce on the Third Age would highlight policies on long-term care pension reform & the abolition of council tax Mr Kennedy said. Speaking in Brighton he said his party had won pensioners' respect by standing up "for their rights & dignity". The concerns of those in their 50s & 60s should also be considered he said.

PENSIONERS "MISSING OUT ON BENEFITS"

lower incomes than they should because they fail to collect all their benefits and pay too much tax a charity warns. Age Concern is to give out free advice and information at its 150 centres from September 27 to October 4. It will also explain how to claim the Pensions Credit which will be brought in from October 6 & which around half of all pensioners will be entitled to. The whathappened.website is an analytical tool which can be used to study all these aspects of public life in a number of ways.


If you enter the date, say 12th May 1998, into the Google search engine above you will be able to select the pages which have notes of the news on that day. You can then use the Note Navigation Bar to scroll through all the data for that day.


You can move to the next day or to the previous day by using the Date Navigation Bar.


On any particular day, you can see what else happened on that day by using the "What Else Happened on this Day" navigation bar. This will take you through all the available data for the selected day.
