NO TALKS UNTIL VIOLENCE ENDS ` SHARON

Israel's Prime Minister-elect Ariel Sharon has said the Middle East violence must end before peace talks with the Palestinians can resume. "The Palestinian Authority must take immediate action to stop terror & violence " he said. Mr Sharon met with US Secretary of State Colin Powell in Jerusalem. Mr Powell who is also meeting Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat vowed to try to bring the sides together.

GP CHARGED WITH 21 INDECENT ASSAULTS

A doctor has been charged with 21 indecent assaults against females police say. The 57-year-old GP from the Wrexham area of north Wales will appear before magistrates in the town on March 5. The charges against him follow an investigation by Wrexham CID which began in August last year. Health authority officials & the General Medical Council have co- operated with inquiries police said.

ISRAEL ARMY CHIEF FOR TOUGHER APPROACH

General Shaul Mofaz the Israel army chief of staff has said the security forces need to take a tougher approach when dealing with Palestinian attacks. He accused the Palestinian Authority of giving a "green light" to attacks & of having become a "terrorist entity". Gen Mofaz said he would present his proposals for tougher measures once Ariel Sharon has formed his government. Mr Sharon has drawn two small rightwing parties into his emerging coalition which already includes Labour & Likud

LIB DEMS PLEDGE £1 000 RISE FOR NURSES

The Liberal Democrats have pledged a #1 000 pay rise for nurses midwives and other low-paid health professionals The hike is part of a package forming the basis for the Lib Dems' manifesto in the forthcoming General Election. Other plans include a £3bn-a-year rise in education funding money for 6 000 more police & an increase for OAPs. The party also promises 11 000 new hospital beds & training places for 3 300 doctors & 11 400 nurses.

PUPILS HURT IN SCHOOL AEROSOL INCIDENT

Thirty pupils needed hospital treatment after a noxious aerosol was discharged inside a Surrey school. The pupils from Bishop Wand School in Sunbury-on-Thames were treated for dizziness & sickness at St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey. The hospital said doctors believed the aerosol may have been a pepper spray. Police said a boy aged 13 was arrested in connection with the incident which the school described as "isolated".

MALE SHIPMAN PATIENT'S DEATH UNLAWFUL

The first inquest into the death of a male patient of Harold Shipman has recorded a verdict of unlawful killing. Ninety-year-old Charlie Killan suddenly died in 1997 at home in Hyde Greater Manchester in the presence of the GP. He had generally been of good health the Ashton-Under-Lyne inquest heard. The death certificate indicated heart disease but Shipman had fled the house "like a child caught stealing" moments after death a neighbour said.

GOVT BID TO DOUBLE ORGAN DONOR NUMBERS

The Government is planning to double the number of people on the organ donation register by 2010 Health Secretary Alan Milburn has said. The number registered would go from 8m to 16m under the scheme. Mr Milburn also pledged a 100% rise in kidney transplants by 2005 with heart and lung transplants rising by 10% during the same period. He described the changes as "an unprecedented national effort".

MOTORISTS SAY COUNCILS NOT PREPARED

Motorists stuck in the snow have been asking why councils didn't do more to prepare for the bad weather. The authorities say there was nothing more they could have done to prevent problems despite forecasts. Lothian & Borders Police say these are the worst conditions in years. The AA said conditions had been made worse by motorists ignoring travel warnings. The adverse weather conditions have also hampered efforts to reconnect homes without power.

GOVT SHUTS PATHS TO STOP FOOT-AND-MOUTH

The Government has introduced powers to shut down rights of way in England & Wales in an effort to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth. Under them councils have discretionary rights to shut down paths across individual premises & affected areas. The Scottish Executive is expected to announce similar measures later today. Meanwhile many National Trust & Forestry Commission properties in affected areas have been closed off.

NEW FOOT-AND-MOUTH OUTBREAKS CONFIRMED

The number of cases of foot-and-mouth disease in England & Wales has risen to twenty-six. At least eight new outbreaks have been confirmed today ` the latest two being on farms in Warwickshire & at North Fambridge in Essex. Two of today's confirmed cases were in Powys in mid-Wales. Other cases were announced in Leicestershire Devon East Lancashire and Herefordshire.
