SYRIA LASHES OUT AT "TERRORIST" SHARON

The Syrian media has attacked leading Israeli candidate for the premiership Ariel Sharon as a racist & terrorist. Al-Baath the ruling party newspaper said he was "one of the most racist terrorist & criminal" symbols of the modern age and would probably win. The paper also attacked the US & Europe for their failure to distance themselves from Mr Sharon. It singled out Mr Sharon for his role in the invasion of Lebanon in 1982 & ensuing massacres of Palestinians.

BLAIR CONGRATULATES SHARON ON VICTORY

The Prime Minister has congratulated new Israeli premier Ariel Sharon on his election victory. In a brief call Tony Blair offered his help to build a more stable future for the Middle East peace process. He said Britain & the European Union remained willing to play any role if it were useful. A spokesman said Downing Street knew Mr Sharon had a different approach to his predecessor but accepted his victory.

MAKE PARENTS PAY FOR CHILD CRIME ` SNP

The Scottish National Party has pledged to bring in 1 000 extra officers to boost police numbers. The party has also unveiled proposals to make parents pay compensation for the actions of their children. Unveiling the party's justice policies for the forthcoming Westminster election Roseanna Cunningham promised #25m to increase police numbers. The SNP also pledged to strengthen the Sex Offenders' Register by extending it to cases with an adult victim.

Israel's new Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has been warned to expect "bloody confrontation" if he fails to respect recent peace accords. Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath predicted conflict if Mr Sharon ignored recent Israeli-Palestinian agreements. The warning followed Mr Sharon's landslide election win over Ehud Barak. The Likud leader has said several times that he considers as "dead" the 1993 Oslo peace accords.

KUWAIT Cabinet members have submitted their resignations in a widely expected move that may have been designed to avoid the questioning of the justice minister over inefficiency allegations. UK FARMERS VOICE FEARS OVER GERMAN BEEF

The National Farmers Union has called for a ban on German beef exports unless BSE control measures are tightened up. Speaking at the NFU's annual conference in London Ben Gill said confidence in British beef could be threatened due to safety fears over European imports. He said the rest of Europe "must play fair" in ensuring strict BSE controls. Mr Gill also urged politicians of all parties to put agriculture at the heart of their general election campaigns.

TWO RESCUED 10 DAYS AFTER INDIAN QUAKE

Indian troops have dug two people from the rubble of their home 10 days after it was destroyed by the Gujarat quake. They were trapped in the kitchen of their house in Bhuj where they had enough food & water to survive. Their cries for help were heard by rescuers. An estimated 30 000 people died in the quake & efforts are now under way to care for the 500 000 left homeless.

BISHOP'S WARNING PRIOR TO BLOODY SUNDAY

The former Bishop of Derry has described how he told members of his congregation to avoid trouble on the day of the 1972 Bloody Sunday riots. Dr Edward Daly ` famously filmed waving a white handkerchief as he helped lead a shot man to safety ` was speaking at the Saville Inquiry into the shootings. He said he made his plea before the ill-fated march that led to 14 deaths. He added there was "no justification" for the actions of British troops.
