CREW OF HARRIER PRESUMED DEAD IN CRASH

The crew of a US Marine Corps Harrier jet are presumed dead after the aircraft crashed as it came in to land. The jump-jet crashed while approaching the runway yesterday afternoon said a spokesman at the Cherry Point base in North Carolina. One Harrier training squadron & three squadrons that accompany the Marines on missions are housed at the base. The US Marines temporarily grounded their Harrier jets in 1999 & 2000.

FORD INVESTS £245m IN 600 UK JOBS BOOST

Motor giant Ford has confirmed it is to invest £245m at its plant in Bridgend creating more than 600 jobs. The company said production of engines at the site will rise by a third to more than 1m units a year. The south Wales plant will produce around 100 000 V6 petrol engines every year for the new "baby" Jaguar models. Chief executive officer of Ford Europe David Thursfield said: "The plant has a commitment to quality & efficiency"

VAUXHALL SAFEGUARDS 1 200 JOBS AT PLANT

Car giant Vauxhall is to invest £200m building its new Vectra model at Ellesmere Port on Merseyside safeguarding more than 1 200 jobs. The company will start manufacturing the Vectra at the plant where the Astra is already made in 2002. Chairman Nick Reilly said it was an "excellent opportunity".

300 000 BANK JOBS "GOING IN W EUROPE"

Some 300 000 banking jobs will disappear in western Europe by 2002 due to mergers & acquisitions the International Labour Organisation says. Over 130 000 jobs were lost during the 1990s & the number continues to rise because of the increased pace of mergers the ILO said in a report. The expected slowdown in world economic growth would also play a part. But job cuts are to blame for merged firms not achieving targets it added.

UK SEEKS MEETING OVER BOMB "CONFESSION"

British diplomats are seeking an urgent meeting with Saudi Arabian officials after a Briton apparently confessed to two bombings in Riyadh last year. Diplomats said they had been given no warning about the confession made with a Belgian & a Canadian on Saudi TV. Briton Alexander Mitchell from Kirkintilloch is an anaesthetist at the Security Forces hospital in Riyadh. One Briton was killed & four were injured by the bombings last November.

5m FOOD POISONING CASES IN 2000 ` STUDY

Five million people in the UK suffered food poisoning last year a report by the Food Standards Agency suggests. The FSA warns that official figures may massively underestimate the incidence of cases as many go unreported. Food poisoning symptoms were suffered by 14% of people in England last year compared to 13% in Scotland 11% in Wales & 10% in Northern Ireland. But only 20% told their GP or staff at the suspected source of infection.
