HALIFAX SLASHES MORTGAGE RATE TO 6.75%

The Halifax Britain's biggest mortgage lender is cutting its main mortgage rate by 0.75% to 6.75% signalling the start of a mortgage war among lenders. Its rival the Nationwide cut its main lending rate to 6.5% yesterday. The Halifax says the battle is now on for the hearts & minds of consumers. With two of the largest mortgage lenders now slashing their rates there is immense pressure on other lenders to do the same says a BBC correspondent.

US AND BRITAIN DISCUSS TACTICS ON IRAQ

Britain & the US are looking at whether UN sanctions can be targeted more directly at the regime in Baghdad the Government has said. Officials say they want to cause less damage to ordinary Iraqis. The tactical re-think comes amid mounting international criticism over allied bombing raids on Iraq last week. A BBC correspondent says there is a tacit admission that the propaganda war is being lost by Britain & the US.

EUROTUNNEL PLEA FOR REFUGEE CLAMPDOWN

Eurotunnel has asked the French & the British to crack down on the traffic of illegal immigrants through the Channel tunnel "as a matter of urgency". Rising numbers trying to enter Britain had seriously disrupted Eurotunnel services over the past year it said. Each night up to 1 000 people gathered 3kms from its French terminal & tried to walk through the tunnel it added. Eurotunnel posted losses of £124m last year compared to a £139m 1999 profit.

UK TEENS TOP DRUGS/DRINK LEAGUE ` STUDY

Teenagers in Britain are more likely to have taken illegal drugs than peers in other European countries a study says. Some 36% of 15 & 16-year-olds say they have tried drugs including hashish and ecstasy the European School Survey Project on Alcohol & Other Drugs said British teenagers also top the league of offenders for drinking & smoking. Other high drug use countries are the Irish Republic the Czech Republic & France the study of 19 000 youths says

TURKEY'S LEADERS FALL OUT IN PUBLIC

A meeting of Turkey's Security Council collapsed within minutes after the premier stormed off saying President Sezer had personally insulted him. Bulent Ecevit went straight on live TV to complain about his treatment. "The honourable president... levelled grave accusations against me using impolite language " he said. Mr Ecevit gave no further details but reports suggest that President Sezer had accused him of not taking Turkey's war on corruption seriously enough.

CHEESED OFF SWISS WIN HOLEY WAR WITH US

Swiss dairies have beaten off US attempts to reduce the size of the holes in the famous Emmentaler cheese. Washington officials wanted a maximum 2.06cm diameter half the present size. The Emmentaler Switzerland Association however said US hole regulations did not apply to the cheese of which 30 000 tonnes are exported every year. The ESA has now applied for special labelling to prove the authenticity of the larger-holed cheese abroad.
