RAIDS "A MEASURED RESPONSE" SAYS No 10

Downing Street has called the allied air raids on the outskirts of Baghdad a "measured response" to Iraqi attacks. A spokesman said Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon authorised the raids this week after discussions with the US. Eight RAF planes were involved in the operation ` six Tornados & two VC 10 tanker aircraft the MoD said. It said more Iraqi missiles were fired at air patrols in January than throughout the whole of last year.

MP GALLOWAY FLIES TO IRAQ AFTER BOMBING

Glasgow Labour MP George Galloway has arrived in Baghdad ` following the Allied bombing of Iraq on Friday night. The MP ` a strong critic of the Government's policy on Iraq ` plans to assess the damage done by Allied jets. He remarked: "What the governments are doing are doing is reckless lawless and murderous. It is like Hitler going into Czechoslavkia." Mr Galloway arrested at the Faslane Trident base this week insisted there was no justification for the action.

MISSINGA body found in the River Yare

at Brundall near Norwich is thought to be that of Nick Brown 17 who went missing in the city a month ago. TEENAGERA 16-year-old girl from Essex who has not been named has died in hospital in Chelmsford as a result of suspected alcoholic poisoning after attending an 18th birthday party. RAIL The cross-border Belfast to Dublin railway line is set to remain shut for several days for security checks. Three explosions took place by the track near Newry County Down yesterday.

BACKPACKER FALLS TO DEATH FROM HOTEL

A British backpacker has fallen to his death while he watched a sunrise from the roof of a hotel in Thailand. Darren Hinchcliffe's body was found near the Plaza Hotel in Bangkok the Foreign Office said. The 23-year-old's parents Yvonne & David said they believed he was trying to take a photograph when he slipped. Mrs Hinchcliffe from Oxspring near Barnsley South Yorkshire said: "He was so loveable & full of life."

About 900 fishermen who were laid off when their company went The PAP news agency said an Irish company was impressed with their skills and had started talks on the details. RUSSIA Prosecutors suspect that more than 170 adoptions of Russian children by Italians were carried out illegally. The children are among 600 babies & toddlers taken from Russian orphanages by foreigners between 1993 & 2000 the Federal Security Service said.

RIVIERA IMMIGRANTS' FATE TO BE DECIDED

The French authorities are deciding the fate of 900 illegal immigrants from a ship which ran aground on the Riviera It is believed the crew fled after deliberately grounding the vessel on rocks near St Raphael yesterday. The immigrants ` mostly Iraqi Kurds ` were brought to the West from Turkey. They include about 300 children. The ageing freighter involved has sunk but officials said it was unlikely to pose any environmental threat.

ONE NATION BENEFITS IN QUEENSLAND POLLS

Early results in elections in the Australian state of Queensland have put the far-right One Nation party ahead of Premier John Howard's conservatives. With 50% of votes counted the Labour Party is set to retain power there. But Mr Howard saw his Liberal/National coalition slump as voters deserted to One Nation & its controversial leader Pauline Hanson. One Nation opposes Asian immigration and spending on Aborigines.

COOK WARNS OF "SON OF STAR WARS" COSTS

The Foreign Secretary has warned that the Government's ability to modernise the armed forces may be affected if it "bought into" US missile-defence plans. Robin Cook also said President George W Bush would have to overcome Russian concerns about "Son of Star Wars" the US National Missile Defence system. "This is definitely an issue in the box marked 'handle with care' " he said. "It is very important that whatever is done reduces tension " said Mr Cook.

HEZBOLLAH ATTACK KILLS ISRAELI SOLFIER

An Israeli soldier has been killed & two injured in an attack in a disputed area claimed by Israel & Lebanon. Militant Shiite group Hezbollah said it carried out the attack on its first Israeli target for four months. An Israeli source told the BBC this would hasten prime minister-elect Ariel Sharon's formation of a government. Fourteen Palestinians have reportedly been injured in clashes with Israeli forces in the West Bank & Gaza Strip.

AMNESTY ALLEGES ISRAELI "ASSASSINATION"

Israel has been carrying out a policy of "state assassination" Amnesty International has alleged. It said its delegates had found during a visit to the region that the Israelis had killed some Palestinian activists who could have been arrested. It urged Israel to "put an end to this liquidation policy". Amnesty also attacked Palestinian paramilitary groups accusing them of targeting Israeli civilians.

OIL TANKER DRIVERS VOTE FOR PAY STRIKE

Shell tanker drivers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of a strike in a dispute over pay. The drivers who are employed by P&O Trans-European & are currently contracted to the oil giant are fighting for a 5% pay rise. No strike dates have been set as talks between the Transport & General Workers Union & employers are ongoing A union spokesman said drivers believed a decent pay rise was "long overdue".

MINISTER DEFENDS AIR STRIKES ON IRAQ

Defence Minister Baroness Symons has said Friday's US & UK air strikes on Iraq were a "proportionate response in self-defence" to Iraqi missile attacks. January had seen more surface to air missile attacks on allied planes than during the whole of 2000 she said in a statement to the House of Lords. "The threat is real. Saddam Hussein is trying to kill our aircrew " she added. She said he may be passing off military deaths in the attacks as civilian.

PROBE INTO SAFETY OF ANTI-SMOKING DRUG

The Department of Health has confirmed that 18 people have died after taking a drug to treat nicotine addiction Zyban But it says there is no indication the deaths were directly linked to Zyban prescribed to 270 000 UK patients. The DoH is monitoring the situation but stressed that some users of the drug launched in July may already have been very ill with smoking-related ailments. Makers GlaxoSmithKline say there is "no evidence of an increased rate of death"
