CUBA SAYS US "FOSTERING TERRORISM"

The government of Fidel Castro has accused the United States of encouraging terror attacks by compensating families of0three pilots. $ A Cubin warplane shot down the Cuban- American pilots in 1996 when they were on their way to drop leaflets calling for democracy over the capital Havana. Cuba said they were in its airspace. The US & United Nations said they were over international waters. ! The families will be compensated from 90m dollars of frozen Cuban assets.

BLAIR VOWS "TO PREVENT SADDAM'S HAVOC"

Tony Blair has said he will continue all necessary steps to prevent Saddam Hussein wreaking "havoc suffering & death" across the Gulf region. The Prime Minister said last night's raids by British & US warplanes were necessary to protect allied jets. He pledged more raids if Iraqi surface- to-air missiles threatened jet patrols. "Operations such as the one last night would not be needed if Saddam stopped attacking us " he said in a statement.

IRAQI CANCER GIRL FLIES HOME TO BAGHDAD

An Iraqi girl brought to Scotland for leukaemia treatment by Glasgow Kelvin MP George Galloway has begun her trip home to Baghdad. Six-year-old Mariam Hamza has received further care in America since August last year. Mr Galloway's wife Dr Amineh Abu-Zayyad said Mariam was happy well & learning to swim. Mr Galloway provoked a storm of controversy when he first brought Mariam to Glasgow in 1998.

DOWNING ST PROTEST AGAINST AIR STRIKES

About 50 people have protested in Downing Street against last night's Baghdad air strikes. Demonstrators gathered from Voices in the Wilderness a group which campaigns for the lifting of sanctions on Iraq. Campaigners are calling for the lifting of the ten-year sanctions which they say only hurt ordinary Iraqi people. Spokesman Malin Rai said the bombing by US & UK jets "has no foundation in international law".

GIANT PANDA STILL THREATENED WARNS WWF

The giant panda remains under severe0 threat despite efforts to protect the species according to a report. The conservation group WWF says China's 33 panda reserves are being underfunded by the Beijing government. It has called for panda corridors to be set up to link the isolated mountain habitats where the animals still live. WWF rejects the idea that pandas suffer poor seproduction rates in$the wild & says zoo breeding is not the answer.

WESTERN ALLIES SPLIT OVER RAIDS ON IRAQ

Several key allies of the US & the UK have condemned air raids on Iraq with two Nato nations expressing misgivings. France said they would make the search for a peaceful solution more difficult. Turkish Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit urged Washington to reassess its policy and illegal and there was also criticism from China India Pakistan Egypt & New Zealand.

FRANCE ANNOUNCES BEEF CRISIS MEASURES

Agriculture minister Jean Glavany has announced measures to combat the crisis in the beef industry but failed to promise direct aid to farmers. "We have to pull beef out of the market by means of storage by means of destruction " he told French TV. But farmers' union leader Jean-Michel Lemetayer expressed disappointment. "The important point is for the minister to compensate for the losses farmers have incurred since October each time they sell an animal " he said

SCENES OF SQUALOR ON IMMIGRANT SHIP

An official working to help hundreds of illegal immigrants on board a cargo ship which beached on France's south coast said conditions were terrible. Marc Petit from the Var region told French radio that there were about 300 children & 200 elderly people among the passengers at Saint-Raphael. "There are no injured & no dead but these people seem to be quite seriously malnourished & dehydrated " he said. The mainly Kurdish refugees have been evacuated to a French marine base.

CATHOLIC AID AGENCIES WANT IRAQ RETHINK

Europe's Catholic aid agencies including Britain's Cafod are calling for economic sanctions against Iraq to be suspended. The sanctions are "humanly catastrophic and politically ineffective " said Cafod director Julian Filochowski. The call follows a visit to Iraq by a delegation from the European agencies. Iraqis are being "de-developed de- skilled & reduced to penury " says the agencies' report.

Labour MPs cheered as the Government announced 29 new hospitals costing #3.1bn & creating 3 000 new beds. But Shadow health secretary Dr Liam Fox said it was a "sham announcement". Agriculture minister Nick Brown said ministers would do all they could to stop a repeat of the BSE scandal which has already killed 86 people. He said Lord Phillips' report revealed "serious shortcomings" in the(previous Tory government's handling of BSE.

KOSOVO SERBS MOURN VICTIMS OF BUS BOMB

Hundreds of Kosovan Serbs have gathered to mourn victims of a bus bombing which killed seven people & injured 43. Serbs from surrounding villages were converging on the cemetery in Gracanica near Pristina where some victims are believed to have come from. Kosovo Serbs are due to hold a protest rally in Mitrovica. Belgrade has declared Sunday a day of mourning. Ethnic Albanian leaders condemned the attack as a serious blow to peace.
