ERIKSSON REVEALS FIRST ENGLAND SQUAD

New England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has sprung several surprises after naming his first squad. Eriksson named a 31-man squad to play Spain in a friendly at Villa Park Birmingham on Wednesday. There are call-ups for young players including Joe Cole Michael Carrick & Frank Lampard of West Ham Everton's Michael Ball & Ashley Cole of Arsenal Surprise call-ups include Charlton defender Chris Powell.

SLAUGHTER UNDER WAY AT EIGHT UK FARMS

The mass slaughter of thousands of farm animals has begun in a bid to wipe out the foot-and-mouth disease outbreak. Chief Veterinary Officer Jim Scudamore said the slaughter was under way at six farms across England hit by the disease Animals are also being culled as a precaution at two farms near affected areas in south Essex & Northumberland The Ministry of Agriculture said no new cases had been detected in the past 24 hours but urged continuing vigilance.

SEVEN-DAY BAN ON BRITAIN'S LIVESTOCK

UK livestock is at a virtual standstill after the Government imposed a seven- day ban on the transport of animals that could carry foot-and-mouth disease All abattoirs & livestock markets in England & Wales will also be shut. The disease has been found at six farms in Essex & Northumberland. Exclusion zones have been imposed on farms in the Isle of Wight Bucks & Gloucs. About 600 farms from Aberdeenshire to the Isle of Wight are being probed.

MILOSEVIC'S SECRET SERVICE CHIEF HELD

A former chief of the Serbian secret service has been arrested in Belgrade. Rade Markovic one of deposed leader Slobodan Milosevic's closest allies resigned after the election of the new Serbian government. He was arrested in connection with a failed assassination attempt in 1998 on opposition leader Vuk Draskovic. Mr Draskovic escaped when his motorcade was struck by a lorry but four of his bodyguards were killed.

You can move to the next day or to the previous day by using the Date Navigation Bar.
