"SUICIDE ATTEMPTS" IN LOCKERBIE PROTEST

One Libyan used a razor & another a knife to attack themselves in apparent suicide attempts to protest at the Lockerbie conviction reports say. The men were among about 1 000 people demonstrating over the guilty verdict outside the UN building in Tripoli. Witnesses said the men were angry at what they called a US-inspired verdict. Secret agent Abdel Basset al-Megrahi was found guilty of the 1988 bombing on Wednesday. A second man was cleared.

A member of the British Army bobsleigh team has died in an attack outside a nightclub in Innsbruck Austria the Ministry of Defence has said. The soldier was named as Corporal Derek Osbourne 31 from Cumbria. He served in the Kings Own Royal Border Regiment. The soldier & an uninjured team-mate were caught up in a fight with between six & 10 people a spokesman said. Austrian police said the soldier was kicked several times in the head.

PRESS WATCHDOG CONDEMNS BULGER RULING

Anonymity granted to James Bulger's killers has set a "dangerous" precedent the press watchdog has warned. Chairman of the Press Complaints Commission Lord Wakeham has attacked last month's High Court ruling. Robert Thompson & Jon Venables both 18 will be protected by the decision when they are finally released. But Lord Wakeham told BBC1's Breakfast with Frost that it was the start of a "very very slippery slope".

BRITON BATTLES ON AFTER YACHT SETBACK

British round-the-world yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur has been forced to stop for repairs in the mid-Atlantic. MacArthur from the Isle of Wight was fighting to retrieve first place in the Vendee Globe race when her boat's dagger board was damaged by an object. "I imagined I might have ripped the bottom of the boat out " she said. She is 80 miles behind Frenchman Michel Desjoyeaux with 2 500 miles to go before next week's finish in France.

BT LOOKS INTO HATE CALLS TO BANK STAFF

Royal Bank of Scotland employees have received threatening phone calls at home from animal rights activists after a security breach. The calls apparently related to the bank's former involvement with Huntingdon Life Sciences which uses animals in drug-testing. The bank severed links with the company when it wrote off half of its debts. British Telecom is investigating the telephone security breach.

NIGERIA At least 40 people were killed and several more seriously injured when a speeding bus hit a stationary truck outside the south-western city of Benin yesterday. SAUDI ARABIAAn army officer has been sentenced to 70 lashes for using a mobile phone on a domestic flight. A Saudi court said he had put lives at risk by using the phone during take-off PAKISTAN Police have arrested a nephew of exiled former prime minister Nawaz Sharif. Yusuf Abbas was detained after returning from Saudi Arabia last week.

SERVICES NOW "PRIORITY" IN QUAKE ZONE

The Secretary-General of the Red Cross has said the priority in earthquake-hit India is now to restore basic services. Visiting Gujarat Didier Cherpitel said "a lot more material" was on its way. The Gujurat government estimates that repair work following the quake which killed up to 30 000 people will cost as much as £3bn. Meanwhile the British appeal fund for victims has grown to more than £4m & is expected to reach £15m.

SICK TROOPS SENT TO PRIVATE HOSPITALS

Some troops are being sent to private hospitals for treatment because of a shortage of medical personnel in the armed forces it has emerged. The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts with Bupa & the Nuffield Hospital Group to provide treatment. Figures last July revealed a shortfall of over 25% in the number of medical personnel an MoD spokesman said. Only 6 153 of the 8 543 defence medical services posts were filled at that time

MoD TURNS DOWN SOLDIERS' MALARIA CLAIMS

The Ministry of Defence has rejected compensation claims by 14 members of the Parachute Regiment who caught malaria while serving in Sierra Leone. They claim the MoD failed to issue them with protective medicine until it was too late for it to be effective. Whitehall has said it is prepared to pay compensation to one soldier. But it is contesting the other claims saying it acted acceptably allowing for the speed of the deployment.

FRIDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

A Bill to outlaw bogus home working schemes which promise employment in return for an advance payment was introduced by Labour's Richard Burden. He said about 300 such "scams" were operating in the UK at any one time. Those responsible targeted vulnerable people such as the housebound unemployed or those tied to the house because of domestic responsibilities. The Bill will return to the backbench Bills queue as fewer than 40 MPs voted.

TWO MEN FOUND DEAD AT BOTTOM OF LIFT

Two young men have been found dead at the bottom of a lift shaft in a high- rise block of flats in Southampton. Police said they believed the men in their 20s had been fighting after a party & had fallen 150ft from the 7th floor of the tower block in Shirley. Police believe they hit the lift doors which sprang open. Thirteen people were at the party. The two victims were local but are not believed to have lived in the building.

UN TO CHARGE THREE OVER BRITONS' DEATHS

UN police investigating the killing of two Britons during Indonesia's invasion of East Timor in 1975 have applied for arrest warrants for three men. Indonesia insists journalists Malcolm Rennie Brian Peters and three other reporters were caught in crossfire. Police say a new witness has suggested that the five were murdered. One of the three sought former cabinet minister Mohammad Yunus reportedly commanded frontline troops in 1975.
