COURT OF APPEAL FREES DOWNING ON BAIL

Stephen Downing jailed 27 years ago for murder has been freed on bail by the Court of Appeal. As an "elated" Downing walked free from Littlehey prison Cambridgeshire he said he was looking forward to spending "some valuable time" with his family. Downing 44 was 17 at the time but had the mental age of an 11-year-old.

JUDGES ORDER STONE TO FACE A RETRIAL

The man convicted of murdering Lin Russell & her daughter Megan in 1996 is to face a new trial. Court of Appeal judges quashed Michael Stone's conviction & ruled that he must face a second trial. Stone 40 was jailed in 1998 for the killings & for the attempted murder of Megan's sister Josie. His appeal was allowed after judges ruled that evidence from a key witness in the original trial was unreliable.

CASE OF HANGED MAN GOES TO APPEAL COURT

The case of a man who was hanged for murder 51 years ago has been referred to the Court of Appeal. George Kelly was convicted of murder on February 8 1950 at Liverpool Assize Court & sentenced to death. His appeal against conviction was refused by the Court of Appeal on March 10 1950. He was hanged 18 days later. The Criminal Cases Review Commission said an application for a review of the case was made on March 11 1998.

CONVICTED LIBYAN LODGES VERDICT APPEAL

The Libyan jailed for the Lockerbie bombing has today lodged an appeal against his conviction. Libyan secret agent Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi was found guilty of murdering 270 people when the Lockerbie trial ended last week. A spokesman for British relatives of the Lockerbie victims said he was not surprised Megrahi was appealing. But he said he was disappointed because it would delay the group's call for a public inquiry into the 1988 bombing.

ABERDEEN MAN IS JAILED FOR KILLING WIFE

A man has been jailed for seven years at the High Court in Edinburgh after being found guilty of killing his wife and disposing of her body. Niall McDonald 35 from Aberdeen had claimed his wife Amanda had died during a sex act which went wrong. The judge Lord Penrose said there were tragic aspects to the case but McDonald had shown "total disregard & lack of respect" for his wife. Lawyers acting for McDonald said this morning they would lodge an appeal.

COMMONS OWED £9.9m BILL AFTER WRANGLE

The Commons has been left with a £9.9m legal bill after losing a dispute over the award of contracts to build offices for MPs the National Audit Office says It paid Harmon CFEM Facades £5.3m out of court after a judge ruled it was wrong not to award the company bronze cladding work on Portcullis House. The company had offered the service for #2m less than the successful bidder. The Commons spent £4.6m contesting the discrimination case.

MOTHER AND SON FOUND DEAD IN HOUSE

A pregnant woman & her son have been found dead at their Lancashire home. The bodies of Lucy-Ann MacMartin a police officer's wife who was seven months pregnant and her son Sam six were found in Longton near Preston. Paramedics alerted by neighbours found the boy's body in a bedroom & that of his mother in the garage. Post-mortem examinations are being carried out in what police believe to have been a case of murder & suicide.
