WEDNESDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

An increasing amount of bureaucracy in schools is "killing" teachers Lib Dem Baroness Walmsley told peers. The Government's "golden hellos" to new staff were "too little too late" while pupil-to-teacher ratios were the highest for 25 years she added. But education minister Baroness Blackstone said problems should be put "in context". Some of the claims made "were not supported by the evidence" she claimed

ABATTOIR GIVEN FOOT-AND-MOUTH ALL-CLEAR

Another abattoir sealed off after foot- and-mouth inspectors found a "suspect" bullock has been given the all-clear. A five-mile exclusion zone was in place around the site in Guildford Surrey. Agriculture minister Nick Brown has met National Farmers' Union president Ben Gill to discuss the Government's ban on live animal meat & dairy exports. The move came after 27 pigs infected with the highly contagious disease were discovered at an abattoir in Essex.

Workmen on the Isle of Lewis have uncovered a cache of World War II firebombs. One exploded when it was lifted out of a trench & thrown on to some wasteground near Uig. Bomb disposal experts have been called in. PROTESTA group of about a dozen anti- GM protesters padlocked themselves to the entrance of a Sainsbury's distribution warehouse in East Kilbride as part of a UK-wide protest. OIL The government has given the go ahead for a new North Sea oilfield 200 miles east of Dundee. It is a small two-well field to be called Halley.

FARMING LEADER URGES CALM OVER BAN

A Scottish farming leader has urged producers not to panic following an export ban on all British livestock. Scottish NFU President Jim Walker was speaking after the discovery of foot and mouth disease in England. The ban affects cattle pigs sheep goats & deer & applies equally to live animals & carcasses. The disease is highly-infectious & can spread rapidly. One Scots firm which supplies top European hotels & restaurants called it "the final straw"

TURKEY ALLOWS CURRENCY TO FALL FURTHER

The Turkish lira ` valued at 691 000 to the dollar yesterday ` is set to fall further after Ankara abandoned exchange rate controls. Inflation ` currently at a 14-year low of 10% ` is expected to rise. The move was designed to curb rocketing interest rates amid market fears of a political crisis. It follows a furious row between Prime Minister Ecevit & President Sezer over measures against corruption.

UNION "SADDENED" BY BREWERY JOB LOSSES

Union leaders have demanded answers from brewing giant Scottish Courage after it announced 170 jobs losses. It is to end bottling & canning work at its Fountain Brewery in Edinburgh but it also said it would be investing #8m in other areas at the site. A TGWU spokesman said he wanted more details of the investment & that he was "saddened" by the job losses. The spokesman said: "The workers are sick as pigs. Our people feel they have been kicked in the teeth."

FEARS GROW OVER FOOT-AND-MOUTH OUTBREAK

Concerns are growing in Scotland about the possible spread of foot-and-mouth disease from the south of England. The Scottish National Farmers Union said dozens of lorries made weekly trips to the Essex abattoir where the disease was discovered yesterday. But Brian Pack chief executive of ANM Auctions in Inverurie said the risk of infection was slight because animals made the journey south in two stages. Records are being scanned to identify the lorries which visited the abattoir.
