EX-ELF EXECUTIVE TO AWAIT EXTRADITION A German court has ruled that a French fugitive is to be held in custody until extradition proceedings begin next week Alfred Sirven 74 was detained at Frankfurt airport after deportation from the Philippines. A former executive of French oil firm Elf Aquitaine he is a key figure in the corruption trial of ex-French foreign minister Roland Dumas.

GUNMAN SHOT IN LEG NEAR US WHITE HOUSE

A lone gunman has been shot & injured by US security staff near the grounds of the White House in Washington. The man believed to be 17 years old was approached by a Secret Service agent & shot in the leg. The suspect has now been taken into custody & is being treated in hospital for his injuries. It is not known what his motives were. Agents say President Bush working in the building was never in any danger.

MAN CHARGED WITH MURDER OF SARAH PAYNE

A 42-year-old man has appeared in court charged with the murder of eight-year- old schoolgirl Sarah Payne. Roy Whiting of Littlehampton West Sussex has also been charged with kidnapping Sarah of Hersham Surrey. He was arrested on Tuesday by police investigating the murder after being arrested & released twice in the early stages of the inquiry. Chichester magistrates remanded him in custody until February 19.

ALDER HEY ORDERED NOT TO RETURN ORGANS

Liverpool's Alder Hey Children's hospital has stopped returning organs and foetuses to families affected by the organ retention scandal. The hospital says its action is part of a UK moratorium. This has been ordered by the Retained Organ Commission which was set up after last week's Redfern report to allow hospitals to check what they have But parents support group Pity 2 says it had not been told of the plan.

The number of people waiting for NHS

hospital treatment rose by 13 200 in December Government figures show. Health minister John Denham said the increase to 1 034 400 was "expected". "Waiting lists always go up in winter but this year better planning & more investment have kept increases to a minimum " he said. But of the December figure 48 400 had waited more than a year a rise of 600 on the previous month.

WAHID SUPPORTERS TORCH GOLKAR PARTY HQ

Indonesian police have fired tear gas at thousands of supporters of President Abdurrahman Wahid in violent protests. Demonstrators attacked the headquarters of the opposition Golkar party in the city of Surabaya setting it on fire. They were angry at its role in pressing for speedy impeachment proceedings against the president who is implicated in two corruption scandals. Earlier Mr Wahid fired his justice minister over suggestions he resign.

PRISONS CHIEF GETS SUPPORT FROM STRAW

The head of the Prison Service in England & Wales Martin Narey who threatened to quit his job has been backed by Home Secretary Jack Straw. Mr Narey said he would resign if prison governors did not support him over jail reforms. Speaking on BBC Radio 4 Mr Straw said he agreed entirely with Mr Narey. Mr Straw said: "His speech was a wake- up call for the governors & the staff in the prison service."

GANG SMASH THROUGH FLOOR TO REACH BANK

An armed gang broke into a bank by smashing through the floorboards in a flat above & jumping from the ceiling Three of the flat's occupants were held hostage for several hours & attacked as the gang waited for the Halifax in Twickenham south-west London to open. The robbers then forced their way into the bank & attacked two members of staff before fleeing empty-handed. Police are questioning three men who were arrested shortly after the raid.
