CRICKET LEGEND SIR DON BRADMAN DIES

Australian cricket legend Sir Don Bradman has died aged 92. Sir Don who achieved an unrivalled Test batting average of 99.94 died at his home in Adelaide after falling ill with pneumonia. Last year an international panel of cricketing experts named Sir Don as the best cricketer of the 20th Century. He became a national sporting hero with his feats at the crease & remained an Australian icon after retiring in 1948.

MONDAY'S HIGHLIGHTS AT WESTMINSTER

Commuters could view rarely-displayed national works of art at railway stations an MP has suggested. The idea was raised by Labour's Gordon Prentice after it was disclosed that 14% of national collection items are not available for public viewing. Tory ex-minister Nicholas Soames gave the idea his full backing. And Minister for the Arts Alan Howarth said it was "highly desirable" that more works were displayed.

GOVT SHUTS PATHS TO STOP FOOT-AND-MOUTH

The Government has introduced powers to shut down rights of way in England & Wales in an effort to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth. Under them councils have discretionary rights to shut down paths across individual premises & affected areas. The Scottish Executive is expected to announce similar measures later today. Meanwhile many National Trust & Forestry Commission properties in affected areas have been closed off.

IRISH REPUBLICA six-year-old girl has

died after a fire in a caravan in Dun Laoghaire County Dublin. Several other people including the girl's mother & seven-year-old brother escaped. AUSTRIA Two people have died in separate avalanches at ski runs in the Tyrol region. One victim is reported to be German. AUSTRALIA The authorities have placed restrictions on alcohol sales in the Northern Territory town of Katherine after widespread drunkenness among people evacuated from flood-hit areas.

ROYAL APPROVAL FOR MPs' OFFICE BLOCK

The Queen has formally opened a new #235m office block for MPs ` praising it despite its troubled history. Portcullis House opposite Big Ben at Westminster has been hit by delays difficulties and a legal dispute. The Queen said: "The impressive new building both complements & contrasts with the Palace of Westminster." The building which houses 210 MPs was commissioned in 1992 for £165m but a series of delays saw the price rocket.

An auction of the Millennium Dome's contents has been attacked by the Conservatives as they revived calls for Dome minister Lord Falconer to resign. Shadow Culture Secretary Peter Ainsworth said it was ridiculous to hold the sell-off before knowing what the attraction would be used for. But Tourism minister Janet Anderson defended the auction. She said it would not "prejudice future uses of the Dome".
