FRENCH POLICE INTERCEPT UK-BOUND DRUGS

Police in eastern France have arrested a man trying to smuggle heroin worth #4m across the European continent. The smuggler an Italian national said he was on his way to Britain when he was stopped in his camper van at the tolls in Villefranche-sur-Saone. A search turned up 120 packets of the drug which had originally come from Turkey with a total weight of 68kg. The haul which is the French police's third biggest heroin seizure followed a lengthy surveillance operation.

PM IN DEAL TO COMBAT CHUNNEL IMMIGRANTS

Britain & France have negotiated a deal to stop illegal immigrants getting into the UK on board Eurostar trains. A joint commission is being set up ` and UK immigration officials will check people boarding Paris-London services. France will also make the Paris to Calais leg an international route so all passengers must carry proper papers Prime Minister Tony Blair & French President Jacques Chirac agreed the deal at the Anglo-French summit.

CLASS NOT MASS GERMAN FARMERS TOLD

The agriculture minister in Germany has announced reforms to agriculture policy to try to win back consumer confidence. Renate Kuenast who has ministerial responsibility for consumer protection and agriculture said Germany's farmers must aim for quality not quantity. The existing system of farm subsidies encourages overproduction she said. "Our yardstick is now class not mass." Beef sales have dropped sharply because of consumers fears over BSE & the preventive use of antibiotics.

GERMANY

Five people have been killed by an explosion in a house in the north- eastern town of Eisenhuettenstadt. Four of the victims were workmen who had been called to the premises to investigate a suspected gas leak the German news agency DDP reports. BAHRAIN Qatari Al-Jazeera satellite TV reports that the Bahraini authorities have released all political prisoners. The TV correspondent said the reprieve order included those sentenced to death after being convicted of murder during riots in Bahrain in 1994 & 1995.

CITY COUNCIL APPROVES COUNCIL TAX RISE

Glasgow has become the first Scottish authority to set its council tax bills for the coming year. City councillors agreed to a below- inflation rise of 2.4% on Thursday. But the local authority has been forced into making savings such as its move to withdraw from local government organisation Cosla. The council said it was spending cash on schemes to improve the health of Glaswegians including free fruit for primary & nursery school pupils.

HEALTH TRUST SOLD SKIN FOR MoD RESEARCH

A health trust has apologised to plastic surgery patients for selling surplus skin for chemical weapons research without proper explanation. ( 0 Salisbury Health Care Trust sold breast and abdominal skin to the Porton Down establishment for £17 000 a year. Patients signed a consent form but it did not fully explain the purpose was to develop drugs & protective creams. A trust statement said it was more "appropriate" to ask patients directly.

BLAIR CONGRATULATES SHARON ON VICTORY

The Prime Minister has congratulated new Israeli premier Ariel Sharon on his election victory. In a brief call Tony Blair offered his help to build a more stable future for the Middle East peace process. He said Britain & the European Union remained willing to play any role if it were useful. A spokesman said Downing Street knew Mr Sharon had a different approach to his predecessor but accepted his victory.

POWELL TO VISIT MIDDLE EAST FOR TALKS

US Secretary of State Colin Powell has said he will go to the Middle East this month before meeting Nato colleagues and European Union leaders in Brussels. He said he would assess conditions in the region which he is visiting for the 10th anniversary of the Gulf War. Mr Powell is expected to meet Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon & 0 Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat. The Bush administration is reviewing the US's role in the Middle East.

ISRAEL PM "WILL NOT RESUME EGYPT TALKS"

Israel's new leader Ariel Sharon has reportedly ruled out resuming peace negotiations with Palestinians from where they left off in Egypt last month The Palestinian Authority had called for talks to resume where they had ended under former premier Ehud Barak. It proposes an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Mr Sharon's adviser Zalman Shoval told Israel radio the previous talks were not binding on the new government.

ARAFAT ASKS SHARON FOR NEW PEACE TALKS

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat has told new Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon he wants to resume peace talks. But Mr Sharon speaking to Mr Arafat for the first time by telephone said that violence must end beforehand. In a separate development he offered his predecessor Ehud Barak the job of defence minister in a joint government. The Labour Party of which Mr Barak is a member is said to be deeply divided over whether to accept the offer.
