PIPE BOMB ACCUSED COLLAPSES IN COURT

One of four men charged with making a pipe bomb following a raid in Ealing west London has collapsed in court. head on the dock during proceedings at Horseferry Road Magistrates' Court. The court was adjourned for over two hours while an ambulance was called. Lee was remanded in custody until Monday. The three other men were remanded until February 12.

A German court has ruled that a French fugitive is to be held in custody until extradition proceedings begin next week Alfred Sirven 74 was detained at Frankfurt airport after deportation from the Philippines. EX-SPY'S BOOK PROFITS FROZEN BY COURT

A court injunction has frozen former MI6 officer Richard Tomlinson's profits from his memoirs. More than 1 500 copies of the ex-spy's book The Big Breach were flown into Britain on Tuesday after Government attempts to ban them failed. But Treasury solicitors have secured an injunction stopping him from receiving royalties from the publication. The Foreign Office said Mr Tomlinson had breached Government copyright.

THAI POLICE PROBE MURDER OF BRITISH MAN

Police in Thailand are investigating the murder of a British man whose body was discovered in a hotel in the country the Foreign Office has said. The victim was found in the Kanchanaburi province on Saturday after flying into the country last week. The Sun newspaper said a couple were in custody after admitting to the murder. A Foreign Office official said the man's name would not be released until relatives had been informed.

HAND TRANSPLANT MAN HAS IT AMPUTATED

The world's first hand-transplant patient has had his new hand amputated after his body began to reject it. removed as he had no feeling in it. Australian microsurgeon Earl Owen who co-led the team which performed the transplant in France in 1998 said Mr Hallam failed to look after it properly He went without drugs for weeks & did not follow the treatment plan he said.

British round-the-world yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur has been forced to stop for repairs in the mid-Atlantic. MacArthur from the Isle of Wight was fighting to retrieve first place in the Vendee Globe race when her boat's dagger board was damaged by an object. "I imagined I might have ripped the bottom of the boat out " she said. She is 80 miles behind Frenchman Michel Desjoyeaux with 2 500 miles to go before next week's finish in France.

SCHROEDER SHOOTS DOWN US MISSILE PLAN

German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has said Russian opposition to a US missile defence plan so-called "Son of Star Wars" must be seriously considered. Russia had a vital role in lasting security in Europe he said demanding clarity from the US on the proposals. US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld again said the plan posed no threat but European leaders fear a new arms race. Nato chief Lord Robertson believes the plans would not affect the alliance.

PINOCHET "CHARGED OVER KILLINGS OF 75"

A judge in Chile has indicted former dictator Augusto Pinochet in connection with the deaths of 75 political prisoners in 1973 reports say. The charges relate to kidnap & torture by the "Caravan of Death" squad during Pinochet's 17-year military rule Judge Juan Guzman issued an order for the arrest & trial of Pinochet 85 having interrogated him last week. Pinochet is expected to be placed under house arrest in Santiago.

STONE WINS RUSSELL MURDERS APPEAL BID

Three judges have said the appeal of Michael Stone convicted of killing Lin and Megan Russell must "succeed" on grounds relating to a witness. Stone 40 is serving three life sentences for the murder of the mother and daughter in 1996 & the attempted murder of Megan's sister Josie. The judges were concerned at evidence from prosecution witness Barry Thompson The court is to decide on whether to allow a retrial.
