SHARES BONANZA FOR WOOLWICH INVESTORS

More than 2.5m members of the Woolwich Building Society are to receive a free share hand-out worth up to £1 200. A basic distribution of 450 shares will be made to about 2.57m people who are expected to qualify the society said. Shares will be priced at between 175p and 200p giving a market value for Woolwich of between £2.96bn & £3.38bn when the company floats in July. Up to 2 000 free shares will be given to savers who have been with the society for more than two years.

CAR SALES TOP 2m BUT RECOVERY "PATCHY"

New car sales in 1996 accelerated to their highest level for seven years. The figure of 2.03m was 4.12% ahead of the 1995 total & the third-highest annual figure said the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders. But the society described the number of private sales as disappointing & said the sales recovery was still patchy. The last time new car sales reached 2m was in 1990 & the total has only been surpassed twice ` in 1988 & 1989.

HALIFAX TO GIVE FLOAT DETAILS ON

The Halifax the UK's largest mortgage lender will give details of its planned stock exchange flotation & conversion to a bank on Friday. Analysts have recently increased their estimates for the likely size of the Halifax float to around £11.0bn from previous predictions of around £10.0bn. This reflects the Halifax's own performance & the fact that the most comparable stock Abbey National the first & only building society to become a bank to date has been outperforming the market.
