BOMB EXPERTS EXPLODE BELFAST CASTLE VAN

Army bomb experts have carried out a controlled explosion on a van left in the grounds of Belfast Castle which the IRA said contained a landmine. The IRA said security checks had forced it to abandon the vehicle last night. The Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Patrick Mayhew said it was a New Year message from the IRA. He said it meant that the IRA had never turned away from its twin policies of terrorism & temptation.

A landmine dumped by the IRA in Belfast shows talk of another ceasefire is fatuous a Loyalist MP has warned. David Trimble told the Today programme it was consistent with IRA activity over the last couple of months. "There's no indication whatsoever that the IRA are contemplating politics; every indication that they are trying to step up activity " he said. "It's time all the other parties in the inter-party talks took this on board."

NEW BODY TO PROBE ALLEGED UNFAIR TRIALS

A new body has been established to probe possible miscarriages of justice. The Criminal Cases Review Commission will decide whether to refer cases to the Court of Appeal ` formerly the responsibility of the Home Secretary. From its offices in Birmingham it will consider cases from England Wales & Northern Ireland. There are currently around 430 such cases a year of which fewer than a dozen normally go to the appeal court.
